Between 1532 and 1536/37, the Dutch artist Maarten van Heemskerck traveled to Rome. Most of the drawings created there were made by van Heemskerck in a sketchbook that he filled with motifs as he wandered through the city, and whose original binding has been lost. Thanks to state-of-the-art technology, researchers at the have now largely reconstructed the original sequence of the book’s pages.

We haven’t been to Rome but can you guess at which other Italian city these photos were shot?

Zwischen 1532 und 1536/37 reiste der niederländische Künstler Maarten van Heemskerck nach Rom. Die meisten der dort entstandenen Zeichnungen fertigte er in einem Skizzenbuch an, das er auf seinen Streifzügen durch die Stadt mit Motiven füllte und dessen Originaleinband verloren gegangen ist. Dank modernster Technik haben Forscher des nun die ursprüngliche Reihenfolge der Buchseiten weitgehend rekonstruiert.

For the second time, the jury selected six finalists from 25 nominees who are designing visionary and groundbreaking architecture: Winner Trần Thị Ngụ Ngôn (Vietnam), as well as Izaskun Chinchilla (Spain), Patcharada Inplang (Thailand), Carolina Rodas and Carla Chávez (Ecuador), Surella Segú (Mexico), and Cazú Zegers (Chile). Their work and stories will be featured in our book, which was published in May.

Founded in 2000, the studio of is a pioneer of contemporary architecture. Its style is characterized by a search for clarity, allowing simple forms to play with light. Over the years, the design language has become more generous, boldly seeking new forms and materials. To mark its 25th anniversary, the publication released at the beginning of the year features 25 selected projects and includes a photographic archive as well as drawings and studies by Kedem, which he created during his time at the AA School of Architecture.

Today is World Cat Day! These fluffy kings and queens of pets have always been a source of inspiration. Ernest Hemingway, for example, revered them: “Cats can manage what remains denied to man effortlessly: go through life without making noise.”

Whether at home on the balcony, at night over an aperitif on the piazza, at the campsite, in bed while someone is asleep next door - there are many beautiful, dark places where it is an advantage if the book itself glows and we don’t need to switch on a light.
Fortunately, there is a large selection of illuminated books in our e-book series. For example, “On Architecture and Work”, the third volume in the series “The Political Economy of Space” by , which is dedicated to the connection between the economy and architecture and construction as well as the structure of the workforce in the construction industry. It is available both as EPUB and as PDF.
