“You need B2 before you can apply for Ausbildung.”

I hear this statement all the time, but the reality is more nuanced.

Yes, some Ausbildung programs in Germany require B2, especially in fields with high communication responsibility such as healthcare, education, or customer-facing roles.

But not every Ausbildung follows the same requirement.

Some programs accept B1.
Some employers are open to candidates who continue improving their German during training.
And in some cases, motivation, attitude, and willingness to learn also play a major role.

The important thing is to stop treating one experience as a universal rule for everyone.

Requirements can depend on:
• the profession
• the employer
• the vocational school
• and sometimes the federal state

Of course, stronger German skills make the journey easier academically, professionally, and socially.

But many people delay their plans because they believe:
“No B2 = no opportunity.”

That is not always true.

Research your specific field carefully.
Ask questions directly.
Understand the real requirements instead of relying only on generalized advice online.

And if you’re unsure which Ausbildung paths align with your current German level, that’s exactly what I break down in my guide.
