PCS to Germany from the USA: What You Need to Know🇩🇪🇺🇸

Making the move from the USA to Germany? Here are a few things to keep in mind for a smooth PCS transition:

1. Electronics & Voltage Differences:
Germany uses 220V power outlets, compared to 110V in the USA. You’ll need a transformer or adapter for many devices like hairdryers, but most phone chargers and laptops will be fine with just an adapter. Double-check before plugging in!

2. Expensive Items in Germany:
Some things can be pricier in Germany, like American-brand toiletries, snacks, and certain baby products. Stock up on these from the U.S. if you can, especially if you have specific brands you love.

3. Weather & Clothing Considerations:
The German climate can be tricky, with wet winters and cool summers. Invest in a waterproof jacket, sturdy boots, and plenty of layers. It’s also important to have thermal wear for the cold months. Don’t forget lighter clothes for the summer!

Planning on living in Germany? Here are a few quick tips to help you blend in:

1. Be Punctual: Germans appreciate being on time. Arrive a few minutes early!
2. Follow Pedestrian Rules: Wait for the green light-even on empty streets.
3. Expect Bakery Lines: The delicious bread and pastries are worth the wait.
4. Recycle Correctly: Sorting your trash is important here.
5. Observe Quiet Hours: Keep noise down during designated times (early afternoon and after 10 PM).

The Autobahn Experience: No Speed Limits, But Lots of Nerves!

Picture this: You’re cruising down the Autobahn in Germany, and suddenly you realize, there’s no speed limit?! 😱🚗💨
Some drivers are zooming by like it’s a race, while others (like you) are in the right lane, wondering if you missed the memo about how fast you’re supposed to go. 😅

The Autobahn isn’t just about speed-it’s a rite of passage for anyone who’s new to Germany. From the thrill of the fast lane to the quiet comfort of staying safe in the right lane, the Autobahn is one unforgettable experience. 🛣️

If you’re new to KMC or getting ready to move to Germany, here are 5 things you MUST do in your first week:

1️⃣ Get a German SIM card – Vodafone & Telekom work best! Stay connected as soon as you land.

2️⃣ Learn about “quiet hours” – Germans take this VERY seriously! No loud noise at certain times.

3️⃣ Understand VAT forms – Save $$$ on big purchases (yes, even on cars & furniture!).

4️⃣ Try Döner kebab – The best late-night food ever. You’ll be addicted☺️

Military Base Life in Germany – What They Don’t Tell You!🇺🇸🇩🇪✈️

Living on or near a military base overseas is a unique experience-some things you expect, but others? Total surprises. Most of the time, people say things like:

✅ “Why is German internet so slow?!”

✅ “Why do I need 10 different adapters just to plug things in?”

✅ “Why is shipping from the U.S. so expensive and slow?”

✅ “Why does everything close so early, even on base?!”

Life here has its perks too, nice shoppings, amazing travel opportunities, and a tight-knit community. But adjusting takes time!

What Surprised You Most About Moving to Germany? 🇩🇪🇺🇸

Moving to Germany comes with a few surprises-some good, some just… different. Most of the time, I hear people say things like:

1. “Why is NOTHING open on Sundays?!” 🏪❌

2. “Where’s the ice in my drink?!” 🥤🧊

3. “Why is cash still king? Where’s Apple Pay?” 💶🚫

4. “I have to pay for water at a restaurant? And it’s sparkling?!” 🫧💧

Germany has its own way of doing things-some awesome, some that take a little getting used to.
