INTRODUCING “THE ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF VIETNAM” IN BELGIUM 🇻🇳🇧🇪

During his working trip to Europe, Mr. Trần Đại Thắng – Director of Đông A Books – had the opportunity to introduce the book The illustrated history of Viet Nam to the Vietnamese community in Belgium. The event was held in response to Vietnam Book and Reading Culture Day (April 21) and World Book and Copyright Day (April 23).

At the event, Đông A's special and limited editions were also presented. Through this initiative, generations of Vietnamese people in Belgium were able to gain a deeper understanding of Vietnam’s culture and history, contributing to the preservation of national traditions.

During my trip to the Elbel Libro bookbinding studio in Lembach, France — a small town right on the German border — I had the chance to meet the renowned bookbinding artist Benjamin Elbel. Ben has dedicated two decades to the craft of handmade books, including 13 years of professional book design and binding.

He started his career in London, working for the prestigious Shepherds bindery (the workshop responsible for binding four Bibles used in the coronation ceremony of King Charles III of England). Later, Ben moved to Haarlem, the Netherlands, where he opened his own studio. In 2023, he and his family decided to relocate to Lembach for good, as he shared with me that he had "grown tired of the noise of the city."

Ben is a remarkably talented book artist, known for his creative ingenuity and extensive knowledge. He has invented seven unique modern bookbinding structures and authored ten specialist books on the subject. Ben also created 26 decorative letters for two books published by Suntup Editions.

This trip turned out to be truly rewarding. At the studio, Ben generously guided me through the techniques and secrets he has refined and invented over the years. He patiently answered every question I had, with great clarity and enthusiasm. In the near future, Đông A will apply Ben’s distinctive binding techniques to some of its S100 series books.

As evening approached, Ben walked me to the bus stop heading to Haguenau, where I would continue my journey to Strasbourg. The nearly two-kilometer walk became all the more enjoyable thanks to our conversations. As we parted, I asked him: "With such unique inventions, have you registered any copyrights?" Ben smiled and replied: "No, my joy comes from sharing the knowledge I have."

Meet Mr. Maurizio, the bookbinder diligently working on his craft. His workshop is located just inside the store. Despite being very busy with numerous orders, he still takes the time to chat for a while.

⚜️TALE OF KIỀU I S100 ⚜️

This edition of The Tale of Kiều marks Đông A's first-ever application of the letterpress debossing technique on traditional dó paper. With only 100 copies available, the S100 edition is the result of extensive research and experimentation. To ensure the highest quality of artistic and technical printing on dó paper, Đông A commissioned custom paper molds from a traditional craft village in Bắc Ninh, precisely sized to match the book. We anticipate that each letter debossed by our German Heidelberg Letterpress machine will offer readers an intriguing visual and tactile experience. The finished product features an open spine, hand-sewn using the Coptic binding method, with uncut edges on three sides to honor the paper's natural beauty.

The workplace of Mr. Tran Dai Thang, Director of D**g A Culture Joint Stock Company, is located on the 3rd floor of Ca Chep Bookstore (Vo Van Tan, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City). The room was built in 2019, at the same time as the restructuring of Ca Chep Bookstore. The room has an area of approximately 30 square meters.

The room's design prioritizes serving the following purposes: being simple yet capable of holding a large number of books; a workspace with sufficient privacy and comfort; a welcoming and formal reception area; receiving natural sunlight and easily adjusting the intensity of light and dark.

Two-thirds of the room's wall area is lined with shelves, holding about 3,000 books of diverse topics, genres, and forms: special books, leather-bound books, hardcover books, boxed sets, and paperback books. More than half of these books are priced around 100 USD, and a few hundred books range from 1,000 to 4,500 EUR.
