TOGOLAND PROJEKTIONEN in Berlin am Freitag, 20. Juni um 17:00 Uhr im Afrikahaus, Bochumer Str. 25, Berlin-Moabit.

1913/14 wurden in der deutschen Kolonie Togo Abenteuer- und Dokumentarfilme gedreht, die bis heute weitgehend unbekannt sind. Der Filmemacher Jürgen Ellinghaus reiste mit einem mobilen Kino an die Originaldrehorte, um zusammen mit dem togolesischen Publikum den geschichtlichen Hintergrund der Filmbilder und die Auswirkungen des Kolonialismus bis heute zu ergründen.

: How was Africa portrayed in early films? Who shaped these images, and why?

🎥 Togoland Projections is a powerful documentary that dives into the history of Togoland - a former German colonial protectorate in West - Africa - trough rare archival footage and colonial-era-films.

The film projects 🎥 the colonial images directly onto the filming locations in Togo 🇹🇬, confronting present day inhabitants with a painful past. Scenes of domination and forced labour leave a deep impression on viewers. “The Images stay in your head, and you don't forget.”

The screenings of this material, which has never been shown in Togo before, prompt the audiences to reflect on tradition, stereotypes, the “white gaze.” 💭 With this, 🎬 Togoland projections challenges how Africa was represented by European powers and invites us to question the lasting impact of these portrayals.

Director Jürgen Ellinghaus uses the film as a powerful catalyst for opening dialogue about our shared history and the power of media in shaping narratives.
