Important Records Founded in 2001, Important Records recently celebrated 20 years and 500 records.

Important Records (IMPREC) has been curated since 2001 by John Brien who, if pressed for an explanation of the label, will simply state that it is like a great record shop, well-stocked in powerful music without focus or fuss over specific genre categorizations. Not overly conceptual, the label focuses on an extraordinarily diverse roster of artists who are neither ephemeral nor trendy and continu

e to make passionate and evocative music throughout their lives. The character conveyed most often in Important releases isn't style but substance, with a personal and emotional depth that makes the label easy to understand but difficult to explain. Artists including James Blackshaw, Eliane Radigue, Jozef Van Wissem, Catherine Christer Hennix, Duane Pitre, ELEH, Pauline Oliveros, The Thirteenth Assembly, David Rothenberg, Diane Cluck, Acid Mothers Temple, Christina Kubisch, Merzbow and Sm**ma continue to expand the scope of Important by consistently releasing some of their best work through the label.

This triple LP Grateful Dead/John Oswald masterpiece will begin shipping in less than two weeks. If you’ve been waiting to pre-order Grayfolded, the wait is nearly over.

In 1993 Canadian composer John Oswald was invited by Phil Lesh to transform historical recordings of the Dead into something new, along the lines of what they had attempted in their Anthem of the Sun album. Oswald chose to focus on the Dead’s Dark Star, which, over the course of a quarter century, they had expanded and transformed in myriad ways in live performances. Oswald was given access to the Vaults, where over the course of a month, with the guidance of the Dead’s resident archivist Dick Latvala, he collected 105 performances, which through the following year he formed, folded, fondled, and finessed into a kaleidoscopic unstuck-in-time documentary of the Grateful Dead in some of their most psychedelic, symphonic, and rocking excursions— a singular 110-minute fantasy performance.

Grayfolded was originally released in 1994 in between Dick’s Picks Volume 1 (1993) and Dick’s Picks Volume 2 (1995)

“An extended time-warped psychedelic jam that is meticulously hallucinatory.” New York Times

“Rightly acclaimed as the ultimate Dark Star, the one you had always hoped the Dead would one day get around to playing.” London Daily Telegraph

“Grayfolded is literally a hundred or so great nights rolled into one extraordinary extended high. Gorgeous sonic oragami.” Rolling Stone

Way back in the 1980’s a friend and I decoded a satanic message from Weird Al Yankovic, recorded using the backmasking technique, in his original song Nature Trail To Hell from the album In 3-D.

In 1999 that same friend and I waited after a concert to give Weird Al a t-shirt we made at a mall kiosk offering iron-on printing. The front of the shirt stated boldly, in a black font, “Satan Eats Cheese Whiz...” and on the back it said “... And so do I.”

A few years later I found a fan photo of Weird Al wearing the shirt! By that time I’d learned to screen print and immediately began thinking of ideas for a new Satan Eats Cheese Whiz shirt.

In 2020 I was inspired by a pledge reward shirt I received from WFMU’s Wake And Bake program illustrated by Paul McMahon. His illustrations are featured on the front and back of this shirt.

I found this incredibly alive terrarium/cassette while walking past a house I lived in until I was nine years old.

Could this be my long lost Joan Jett tape I bought for a dollar on the bus in 2nd grade!?

Every moment is a moment for Pauline Oliveros but this new piece in the Los Angeles Times describes how the Long Beach Opera is devoting an entire season to Pauline's work.

Long Beach Opera embarks on a risky, unprecedented season centered on pioneering composer Pauline Oliveros. "We’re just going for it."
