The central wall of the space is covered with approximately one hundred drawings, each executed in ink, graphite, and spray paint on collected, surviving papers: butcher paper, used sheets, found fragments. [...] The exhibition's title directly recalls the concept of "refrain" as developed by Deleuze and Guattari in "A Thousand Plateaus": not just a repeating motif, but an ordering gesture, a way through which chaos is temporarily territorialized. It is first and foremost a cave where erotic cave art unfolds, a sort of contemporary and secretly lascivious “Lascaux”. It is also one of those brothels (“lupanari”) found in Pompei, both public and private, with suggestive scenes.

In the erotic process, the signifier and the signified maintain a particular bond—fantasy—which gives rise to desire; there is no desire without fantasy. The images presented are not erotic, for by designating fantasy as fantasy, they exhaust it in a single movement. [...] Here, every element is poised on an unstable threshold, constantly teetering between reality and representation. The intervention moves along the axes of visual art, performance, and expanded choreography, giving shape to a suspended condition — a fragile sense of being.

The title deliberately adopts the popular lexicon of local village festivals, yet conceals a critical stance that unhinges narrative conventions and questions the automatic adherence to what is perceived as real. The project originates from a sensorial childhood memory of the artist: summer festivals perceived from a distance, overheard from the balcony at night as light, spectral presences — distant orchestras filling the warm air.

From this affective suggestion, a narrative construction takes shape, echoing the historic and media aura of The War of the Worlds, the 1938 radio broadcast by Orson Welles that, by simulating an alien invasion, caused widespread panic among its listeners.[...] (excerpts from pr)

In 1835, Charles Darwin left the Galápagos Islands on board the Beagle, taking some giant tortoises with him. One of them, named Harriet, was born around 1830 on the island of Santa Cruz – which, curiously enough, Darwin never visited. (from pr)

In a future still to be written and already corroded, Alessandro Di Pietro constructs a visual language that acts as a grammar of the world: a system where objects, signs, and characters intertwine to shape unstable and fragmented narrative universes. The artist explains that the exhibition title is from the children's book Etwas von den Wurzelkinder, translated as "The Story of the Root Children." This early 20th-century story, written and illustrated by Sibylle von Olfers, is about children who live underground in the winter and come out during spring to forage for insects, flowers, and fruit, before returning to the depths of the earth in autumn. The artist found this image to be evocative and resonant with his work, deeply connected to the earth as a generative and regenerative element. The earth receives, transforms, and absorbs, and it is where figures merge, shifting from subject to object. [...] (from pr)
