Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Malaysia.

We used our parental leave as a chance to learn, grow, and figure our future out. Together, as a family🙏🏻

In this photo we were in Phu Quoc, an island in Vietnam where we actually got sick the worst with an ear infection (all of us). A tough few days but we made it through with amazing doctors :)

Kids just love to play, eat, and most of all connect with their parents 🙏🏻

We are now expert in international clinics and can say that I felt most time more followed there than in Denmark 😂

Don’t be scared to travel with your kids.
We have the strongest memories and the best moments together.
But definitely it’s a big personal growth process: you need to manage your energy, be patient, handle difficult moments without falling apart.
Talking to them and put boundaries has been a big learning for us as parents.

ON ALL THE TIME.
A good advice: alternate breaks to give you space for a run or a walk or just chilling at the beach.
Luckily they still had a lot of napping time :)

The biggest learning when travelling with two kids.

If anything, we regret we didn’t do longer!!!

That we were living too fast. Even when we thought we weren’t.

The danish parental leave allows you to leave Denmark and spend time to travel with your family 🇩🇰
But we didn’t choose the classic travel vacation.
We chose to live in Asia. For 6 months. In 5 different countries: Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Malaysia.

And now we can tell you: Asia slows you down whether you want it to or not.
The heat. The slow pace of people even in the chaos of big cities. The community. The simple life things, as going to the central market to shop mangos and dragon fruit 🥲

We stopped planning so much. Started noticing more.
Days in nature. Connecting to people and new cultures. Tasting new foods. No extras, if anything less practicalities and less overwhelming things in front of our eyes.

We learned one time more that giving our family a break like this teaches you more than every course or career path in life 🫶🏻🌏

I moved to Denmark for that corporate job that I decided to leave after 5 years 🇩🇰

I was so excited to come back until I saw the chaos of a company growing and the stress of people.

Working more from home than what was actually allowed would have helped so much.

I moved to Denmark for this job and this choice has been helping me in life in so many ways, so I couldn’t accept in my brain that while being on maternity leave that company that I loved to be have changed completely.

Train and cars are good ways of commuting until you have kids and a family to take care.

Be honest with your self after maternity leave. Don’t push what you cannot push. Accept the change of a company who grows. You grew also in many other ways.

The “terrible” two in combo with baby arrival was a lovely CHAOS.

I struggled so much in a job place changed, me changed, everyone changed. It was hard but also a realisation of what i reply want in life.

The craziest day of our life.

Not sure if a man can really understand what it means but Casper was doing his best to support me and helping me understanding my emotions :)

That moment made three years of OPOL feel worth every exhausting dinner 🇮🇹🇩🇰🇬🇧

Every multilingual parenting guide says: don’t mix languages in a sentence. Keep it clean. One language, one context.

But the reality is…we mix. Every day.

When I’m saying something in Italian to my daughter, I explain it to my husband in English and he replies to our daughter in Danish.

And our daughter copies all of it.

The research is more nuanced than the rules suggest.
Code-mixing in a rich language environment doesn’t confuse. It models fluency.

Turns out we weren’t doing it wrong. We were doing it real.
Keep the OPOL and enjoy every second of your multi language family life 🧠✨🙏🏻

Fun facts: here we were on a scooter in four no helmets, in Koh Mak (Thailand). Low season, no cars, few locals, sense of freedom. We learned that breaking rules sometimes it’s an intentional decision.

Fun facts: here was August 2022 in Costa Rica. We just started trying to have kids :)

Fun facts: we hired our Filipino au pair in the Philippines to support us on our month adventure on the catamaran. She made our life easier and lot of family pictures :) and most of all we love her so much now and we have such great memories together. Thank you Rhea🙏🏻

Fun facts: Cambodia was absolutely among our favourite countries and we regret it to have planned it too short. We will come back.

Fun facts: at this phase where we were in Thailand, having our baby starting crawling and requiring more attention was lowering the threshold for our daily energy level.

Fun facts: we loved to be on the catamaran exploring El Nido area in the Philippines but we didn’t really had a good match with the captain on board :)

Fun facts: our oldest daughter started to speak English naturally while playing with our au pair on the catamaran.

Fun facts: after Cas got bitten by a dog during our first parental leave in South America, we are super scared of wild animals in these countries thus before the trip we got all the anti-rabies vaccine, despite not mandatory.

Fun facts: this bus ride was 8h from Koh Mak to Bangkok and the driver was completely crazy, non respecting road rules and smoking ci******es no stop. Don’t know how we managed.
