Dominica Electricity Services Ltd., also known as DOMLEC, announced that load shedding experienced on May 26 was caused by a generation shortfall at the Fond Cole Power Plant. Company officials said technicians identified a fault in one of the generating units but kept the system running temporarily to avoid a wider collapse in electricity supply.

The utility company explained that repair works were scheduled to continue overnight into Wednesday morning. DOMLEC warned that if repairs fail and electricity demand exceeds available generating capacity, additional outages could occur across several communities on May 27. The company promised to provide updates if more areas are affected.

DOMLEC also revealed that geothermal generation is expected to resume on Thursday, May 28, which should significantly stabilize the national electricity supply. The company apologized to customers for the disruption and said the restoration of geothermal support is expected to greatly reduce the likelihood of further load shedding.

The inaugural Ediflor Edible Flower Festival, created by Daria Eugene of Cooking with Daria, is set to make its debut in Giraudel on May 24th and 25th, 2026, beginning at 12 p.m. The two-day event will combine cuisine, culture, and creativity through an immersive dining experience centred on the use of edible flowers.

Organisers say the festival is being promoted as the world’s first edible flower festival, offering patrons a fresh and innovative approach to culinary presentation and flavour.

The festival will feature a two-tier full-course dining experience incorporating edible flowers, herbs, and tropical ingredients into appetisers, entrées, and desserts inspired by Dominican and wider Caribbean cuisine.

Tier One dining will be available exclusively on May 24. In addition to the culinary offerings, attendees can expect a flower art and antique exhibition, interactive games and activities, a plant workshop for children, displays by local artisans and vendors, as well as live entertainment and cultural showcases throughout the event.

Founder Daria Eugene said the concept was developed to celebrate local ingredients while introducing a unique culinary experience to Dominica. She noted that while flowers are often viewed as decorative elements, the festival aims to demonstrate how they can become part of a meaningful dining experience.

Through Cooking with Daria, Eugene has continued to promote Dominican cuisine through interactive food experiences and creative uses of local produce.

Organisers expect the event to attract food enthusiasts, chefs, gardeners, and visitors looking for a distinctive addition to Dominica’s culinary calendar. Tickets are available at Bullseye Pharmacy, while additional information can be obtained by contacting Cooking with Daria in Giraudel.

Dominican bouyon entertainers Ebony Empress and Foxy Jael are making waves across the Caribbean music scene with the official release of “Back Up Your Chat,” a high-energy bouyon remix that is rapidly emerging as one of the hottest tracks of the summer. Produced by YoJoshii and Yung Pierre, mixed by Cleverns Pierre and mastered by Khallion, the song blends infectious rhythms with bold lyrics centred on empowerment and self-worth for women.

Written by Everlyne Leandra Walters and Aurelle Joseph and recorded at Felix Studio, the track delivers a strong message aimed at men who make promises without following through. During a recent livestream interview on Jael’s programme, Ebony Empress revealed that “Back Up Your Chat” was actually the first song she ever wrote, but she later decided to revive and modernise it to suit the evolving sound of bouyon music. She explained that the inspiration behind the lyrics came from experiences with men who “have more talk than action.”

The collaboration also represents another important milestone for Foxy Jael, whose debut single “Ah Coming” introduced audiences to her fearless musical style and commanding presence. Jael said she immediately connected with the song after hearing it, noting that she loved its vibe, while Ebony Empress praised her feature for being direct and impactful. With its catchy lyrics, confident energy and undeniable chemistry between both performers, “Back Up Your Chat” is already being hailed as one of the standout bouyon songs of 2026.

For more than 15 years, millions have been invested into street lighting projects across the island - yet many communities, highways and public spaces still remain dangerously dark at night. In this episode, I take a deeper look at the promises, the progress, and the persistent problems affecting national street lighting efforts in Dominica.

From maintenance failures to infrastructure challenges, I break down the TWO major reasons why proper lighting continues to be a national issue, and why better lighting is about far more than convenience. It’s about safety, security, tourism, business activity, and national development.

🎙️ Tune in to this powerful discussion on Keep It Real Commentaries as we shine a light on a problem too many people have learned to live with in silence.

DSAA Awards EC$32,000 in Scholarships and Community Grants

The Dominica SiFoCol Alumni Association distributed EC$32,000 in scholarships and community grants during its annual Beneficiary Handover Ceremony and Dominica State College Scholarship Awards held on May 8, 2026, at the UWI Open Campus Auditorium in Roseau.

The initiative provided EC$12,000 in scholarships to six students of Dominica State College, while two community organizations each received EC$10,000 grants to support social development and youth-focused programmes across the island.

The six scholarship recipients were each awarded EC$2,000 in recognition of their academic performance, perseverance, and commitment despite financial challenges. The students represented a wide range of academic disciplines, including nursing, business administration, auto mechanics, general studies, paralegal studies, and primary education.

Speaking during the ceremony, Dr. Dumansey Eugene Zamo, Dean of Academic Affairs at Dominica State College, praised the association for its continued investment in education and noted that the support provides students with greater confidence to continue their studies.

In addition to student scholarships, the association funded two major community initiatives through its Community Social Impact Grant Programme. Lifeline Ministries Inc. received support for its survivor-centered services assisting victims of gender-based violence, while Anse Kouanari Tourism Association Inc. secured funding for a youth-led environmental conservation project in Castle Bruce.

DSAA President Wayne Liburd said the organization remains committed to creating meaningful change through education and community investment. Since its establishment in 2020, the association has contributed to several national and regional initiatives, including healthcare donations, disaster relief support, scholarship programmes, and youth development efforts.
