Zhang Qishan, the Eighth Master, and the assistant had taken off his mask.
Note:
In the TV adaptation of The Mystic Nine, Zhang Qishan’s deputy, Zhang Xiaoyu, is portrayed as wearing a mask most of the time , a creative choice that has sparked considerable discussion.
According to the production team, the mask serves two purposes:
1️⃣ To conceal a tattoo on the left cheek
2️⃣ To hide a burn scar on the right cheek
However, in the original works The Mystic Nine: Xiangxi Past Events and The Mystic Nine 2, there is no mention of Zhang Xiaoyu wearing a mask. This indicates that the masked setting is a new addition for the TV version. Considering factors such as censorship, visual presentation, and feasibility, modifications to character design are common in adaptations. The key question, however, is whether such changes ultimately serve the character and the storyline.
Reflections on the two explanations:
Tattoo: This is a strong and meaningful idea. It enriches the character’s backstory, provides depth, and marks the first concrete depiction of the Zhang family’s tradition of facial tattoos , feeding back positively into the original narrative.
Burn scar: By contrast, this choice is less convincing. Why must this character have a facial burn? What is the purpose of introducing it? Can the potential positives outweigh the negatives? So far, the reasoning remains unclear.
For this reason, the hope is that the final version of the drama will deliver a rational, convincing, and narratively necessary explanation for this creative decision.

注：
在《九门》影视化过程中，张启山的副官张小鱼设定为长期戴面具，这一改动引发了不少讨论。
根据剧方解释，覆面的原因主要有两点：
1️⃣ 左脸的纹身
2️⃣ 右脸的烧伤
然而，在原著《九门之湘西往事》与《老九门2》中，并未出现张小鱼覆面的描写。因此，这一设定可以视为剧版的新增内容。考虑到影视化改编涉及审查、视觉效果及表现手法等多重因素，调整人物设定属于常见现象。但关键仍在于是否能真正服务角色与剧情。
关于两个设定的思考：
纹身：这一设定为人物增加了背景与深度，也是首次直观展现“张家人面部纹身”的细节，对原著起到一定的反哺作用。
烧伤：相较之下，其合理性较为薄弱。为何必须让角色带有烧伤？此设定是否能够产生积极作用，并抵消可能的负面效果？目前尚缺乏令人信服的解释。
因此，期待正剧播出时，能给出合理、必要且具说服力的呈现与安排。
