Virtuos acquires co-developer Third Kind Studios

External development partner Virtuos has just announced its acquisition of Third Kind Studios, a move that they say will, "bolster Virtuos’ AAA co-development capabilities" in the years to come.

In an announcement on its website, the company revealed that the studio will continue to be led by its original co-founders and that it seeks to double its headcount in the coming years in response to growing client demand.

Founded in 2016, Third Kind has co-developed several triple-A games in recent years. Many of them come from Xbox (like the new Fable and Sea of Thieves), and also include Predecessor, Omeda's revival of Epic Games' once-defunct MOBA Paragon.

Per CTO Ray Tharanee, this is the first UK venture for its new parent company. On the studio's end, this will allow it to take on "new and exciting triple-A projects" and continue its own growth, including doubling its staff over the next two years.

Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp is shutting down in November, then reopening as a paid game
Nintendo has revealed Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp will go offline on November 29. The good news? A paid version of the game will go online that same day.

The free-to-play mobile spinoff launched in November 2017, and Nintendo called it an honor "to see everyone's lovely, diverse campsites grow and flourish. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the many users who have loved Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp."

As for the paid version, players will be able to transfer save data from the free Pocket Camp version by linking their Nintendo account. Nintendo explained it will be effectively the same exact game, minus in-app purchases or subscription services.

Additionally, the new Pocket Camp will not require a constant online connection, which will affect some features like gifts and visiting players. More details, such as a price point, will be revealed in October.

Spiders devs to strike after alleging mismanagement, 'growing instability'

Update: In a statement provided to Insider Gaming, a Spiders representative called the allegations from STJV "false and even accusatory."

The statement went on to say the claims "in no way" reflect the studio's day-to-day work life, and attack Spiders' reputation. It also affirmed management's commitment to "open and constructive social dialogue."

"Spiders’ employees are the heart of the studio," the statement concludes, "and we are determined to maintain an inclusive and stimulating working environment in which every talent can flourish and of which we can all be proud."

That statement also notes that leadership is aiming to negotiate with staff over the studio's working conditions by the end of the week.

Original story (8/27/24): Workers at Greedfall and Technomancer developer Spiders are striking next week on Monday, September 2, and Tuesday, September 3.

Report: Lawsuits raise concerns over Xsolla CEO's use of company money

A day after teaming with Savvy Games Group to provide financial support developers in Saudi Arabia, Xsolla is now under fire for its CEO allegedly treating the company like his "personal piggy bank."

Per Bloomberg, six former executives have filed lawsuits against Xsolla or CEO Aleksandr "Shurick" Agapitov since 2019. Two of those lawsuits voiced concerns about the company's financial practices or how Agapitov used cash from the game-focused commerce platform, with one allegation claiming he transferred $120 million in company money to his personal accounts between 2021 and 2023.

Of that, nearly $70 million (or 64 percent) was transferred in 2023. Documents obtained by the outlet claim Agapitov would later send up to $25 million back to the account per transfer, often one-to-three weeks after putting money into his accounts.

In total, he's allegedly returned $102 million of that transferred money over a six-month period. While most of that went towards personal loans, $10 million is said to have been directed to "residential construction" (read: a second mansion next to his first).

PTW acquires Ghostpunch Games for $13 million and pitches 'AI-based' services

Service provider PTW has acquired co-development studio Ghostpunch Games for $13 million.

PTW CEO Deborah Kirkham said the deal will enable the company to "deliver exceptional development services" to its global partners.

"Ghostpunch is a highly respected development partner for numerous top-tier triple-A studios, boasting a remarkable retainment rate of over 90 percent," added Kirkham, who described the studio as a "standout" business with an "impressive reputation."

Founded in 2015, Ghostpunch currently has over 60 employees working on projects across a variety of platforms. The studio is familiar with middleware technology such as Unity and Unreal and has worked on notable franchises including Fortnit

Microsoft and Activision Blizzard accused of 'bad faith bargaining' by Raven Software union workers

Unionized workers at Raven Software have filed a National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) complaint against parent companies Activision Blizzard and Microsoft.

According to Game File, the complaint accuses both of "bad faith bargaining" and "concerted activities," the latter of which can include "retaliation, discharge, [and] discipline."

The complaint has been filed as unionized Raven staffers attempt to strike a collective bargaining agreement with their employer. It's unclear what provisions the union is hoping to secure with any potential new contract, but it appears the initial optimism that followed the studio's unionization push has now dissipated.
