JUST IN: 🔹South Sudan Law Sets 40 as Minimum Age for Presidential and Governor Candidates

You must be 40 to run for president or governor

Anyone seeking election as South Sudan’s president or state governor must be at least 40 years old, according to Article 98 of the Transitional Constitution and National Elections Act.

Section 46 of the National Elections Act, 2012, explicitly sets the minimum age at 40 for candidates seeking either president or governor. The law sets a lower threshold for legislative positions, with candidates for the Council of States and legislative assemblies required to be at least 21 years old.

The age requirements mean a person can qualify to contest for a legislative seat from 21, but must reach 40 to seek the presidency or a state governorship. The rules form part of South Sudan’s electoral framework as the country prepares for the December 2026 elections.

CALL: 🔹Patrick Baraka Calls on Kiir to Appoint Youth Representative to Youth and Sports Ministry

Open Letter to H.E. Salva Kiir Mayardit, President of the Republic of South Sudan.

Subject: Appeal for the Appointment of a Youth Representative as Caretaker Minister in the National Ministry of Youth and Sports.

Your Excellency,

I write to you with great respect and a deep sense of responsibility as youth citizen of the Republic of South Sudan. I am writing on behalf of the youth of our nation to humbly appeal for your consideration in appointing a representative of the youth as a Caretaker Minister in the National Ministry of Youth and Sports.

Your Excellency, the youth of South Sudan constitute the largest segment of our population. They're the leaders of today, and yet they're voices are often underrepresented in the decision-making processes that shape they're lives.

The National Ministry of Youth and Sports is the primary Institution responsible for addressing the needs, aspirations, and challenges of young people across the country. It is therefore essential that the leadership of this National Ministry include someone who truly understands and represents the live experiences of the youth. Your Excellency, they're recognized and appreciated the efforts your government has made toward youth empowerment, including initiatives in Education and Sports. However, they're believe that the meaningful participation of youth in leadership - particularly in the National Ministry that bears they name- remains a critical gap that can be addressed through this appointment.

They trust in your wisdom and your continued commitment to the prosperity and unity of our nation. They are ready to work with your government to ensure that the voices of the youth are heard and that they are collective future is secured.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. May Almighty God bless you, and may God bless the Republic of South Sudan.

Respectfully Yours,

Compt. Patrick Baraka Dunstan Wajo
Acting Secretary General of the United South Sudan Party (USSP) National Secretariat. RSS-JUBA

JUST IN: 🔹Speaking to Malakal TV, Kai Tap described Mahjoub Biel Turuk as “a wandering bird that has forgotten its nest.”

Mahjoub Biel Turuk : A Wandering Bird that has forgotten its nest.

The members of the National Democratic Movement (NDM) has taken note of the nonsensical and childish stories manufactured against its Chairman, H.E. Dr. Lam Akol Ajawin, by Mr.Mahjoub Biel on 6 October 2026.

This person appears to have forgotten the political journey that brought him to the positions he once occupied. First of all Mr. Mahjoub was entrusted with the responsibility of serving as SPLM-DC Spokesman in 2014, yet his tenure left nothing/ meaningful impact on the party records. In 2016, he rose to become Secretary-General of the National Democratic Movement-NDM, a position from which he ultimately turned his back on the organization which caused a serious division and betrayed the trust placed in him.

Through the NDM ticket, Mahjoub later became Chief Whip of the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) in the Transitional National Legislative Assembly 2022-2024. Again, his performance left nothing to be remembered. He subsequently became Governor of Jonglei State through the same political ticket in 2024, and his tenure remains a subject of serious criticism by many who witnessed that period.

It is therefore ironic that a political figure whose journey was significantly shaped by the very Movement and leadership he now attacks should suddenly present himself as a political authority capable of rewriting history. A wandering bird may fly from tree to tree, but it should never forget the branch on which it first found shelter.

NDM helped provide Mr.Mahjoub with a political platform, responsibilities, recognition and opportunities to serve the people. Instead of acknowledging that history, he has chosen to return with accusations against the very institution and leadership that once entrusted him with major responsibilities. Even a wandering bird knows the tree that gave it a place to rest.

H.E. Dr. Lam Akol Ajawin is a respected academic, politician, statesman and elder whose intellectual and political school has produced generations of South Sudanese leaders. His contribution to the political discourse and democratic struggle of South Sudan is well established and does not require validation from individuals who have chosen to abandon the principles and institutions that once gave them political relevance.

Mahjoub may choose to criticize Dr. Lam Akol, but criticism does not erase history, and political noise does not rewrite a person's record. Those who benefited from a political home should not mistake departure from that home for ownership of its history.

NDM therefore has no reason to be distracted by the latest political theatrics of a wandering bird. The Movement will continue to respond with facts, history, principles and the strength of the pen whenever necessary.

A bird may change its tree, its direction and even its song, but it cannot change the history of where it came from.

NDM Forward.
