🔴 South Sudan Trial Update

The special court handling the high-profile case involving suspended FVP Dr. Riek Machar, Puot Kang, and others resumes its 69th session today.

The court is set to:
• Re-examine the prosecution’s digital expert
• Allow judges to question the same expert

Justice Minister Michael Makuei Lueth says the trial—though delayed—is now nearing completion after briefing President Salva Kiir.

Dr. Machar, under house arrest since March 2025, faces serious charges including treason, murder, terrorism, and crimes against humanity, alongside senior SPLM-IO officials.

The case relates to the March 2025 Nasir garrison attack, where over 250 soldiers were reportedly killed.

Despite international pressure, including calls from the African Union, proceedings continue as South Sudan heads toward December 2026 elections.

Health Workers in Bor Go on Strike Over 6 Months of Unpaid Incentives

Health workers in primary health care centres in Bor County, Jonglei State, have suspended services after going six months without receiving incentives from a supporting health partner.

The strike has disrupted essential health services, including immunization for children and antenatal care for pregnant women, with workers saying repeated promises of payment were not fulfilled.

County health officials say they are engaging partners and the state government to resolve the issue within one week, urging calm as negotiations continue.

Authorities warn the situation could affect multiple counties in Jonglei if the dispute is not urgently resolved.

U.S. Calls for UN Peacekeeping Reform, Warns Missions Must Adapt or Close

The United States has urged the United Nations to either reform or shut down peacekeeping missions that no longer deliver results, saying some have become long-term operations with limited political progress.

Speaking at a UN Security Council briefing, U.S. Ambassador Jennifer Locetta said peacekeeping should remain a temporary tool to support political solutions, not a permanent substitute for them.

She specifically pointed to the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), saying it has operated for over 15 years with little progress on key political issues between Sudan and South Sudan.

The U.S. also raised concerns about delays, obstruction, and lack of cooperation from host governments, warning that mission renewals should be “earned, not assumed.”

While criticizing underperforming missions, Washington cited the UN mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) as a more positive example of restructuring and adaptation.

The statement signals growing pressure inside the UN Security Council for stricter conditions on peacekeeping mandate renewals.

Aweil South Authorities Crack Down on Cattle Theft, Arrest 10 Suspects

Authorities in Aweil South County, Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, say they have arrested at least 10 suspected cattle thieves as part of ongoing efforts to curb rising livestock theft in the area.

County Commissioner Luka Atelten told Eye Radio that the county remains largely stable, though cattle theft has become a growing security concern alongside soaring food prices, with a bag of bread reportedly costing up to 10,000 SSP due to shortages.

He said the suspects, believed to be coming from different areas including Gogrial and Aweil West, have been detained and are being processed through the justice system, with stolen cattle being recovered and returned to rightful owners.

Security forces, working jointly with police and other security organs, continue to track additional suspects as investigations and arrests ongoing in the county.

CEPO Calls for Investigation into Police Corruption in South Sudan

Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of Community Empowerment for Progress Organization, has raised serious concerns over a viral video circulating on Facebook and TikTok allegedly showing members of the South Sudan National Police Service engaging in corruption and abuse of authority.

Yakani urged the Ministry of Interior, including the Honorable Minister and leadership of various directorates, to treat the video as a reflection of an ongoing problem—not an isolated incident—and to launch a transparent and credible investigation.

He emphasized that such practices, particularly along the Juba–Nimule route, have forced both South Sudanese citizens and foreign nationals—including those from the East African Community—to pay illegal fees at multiple checkpoints.

“This is disturbing and damages the image of our country,” Yakani stated, adding that these actions are not government policy but the result of individuals abusing their authority.

CEPO is calling on authorities to:

- Publicly address the issue
- Hold those responsible accountable
- Take immediate steps to end corruption at roadblocks

The organization warns that continued malpractice risks undermining public trust and tarnishing South Sudan’s international reputation.

PRESIDENT KIIR PRAISES BIOMETRIC REGISTRATION TO ELIMINATE GHOST WORKERS

JUBA, APRIL 16, 2026 — President Salva Kiir Mayardit has commended the ongoing biometric registration and headcount of civil servants, describing it as a key step toward eliminating “ghost names” in the public sector.

The exercise, led by the Ministry of Public Service and Human Resources Development, aims to ensure accurate registration of government employees and prevent duplication across institutions.

According to Minister Ezekiel Lol Gatkuoth, the initiative will strengthen transparency and accountability in public service management.

The meeting also addressed pension payments, as well as political and security developments, with President Kiir reaffirming his commitment to peace ahead of the country’s general elections scheduled for December.

He emphasized that sustainable peace depends on both stability and effective service delivery across the region.
