What Currency Should You Bring to Egypt in 2026?
Planning a trip to Egypt and wondering whether you should bring **US dollars, euros, or British pounds?** 💵💶💷
The good news: all three can be exchanged in Egypt. You usually **don't need to convert your money into US dollars before travelling**. If you're from the UK, bringing GBP and exchanging it through a reliable bank or licensed exchange office in Egypt can be a practical option.
For everyday spending, however, **Egyptian pounds (EGP)** are what you'll need most.
💳 **Cash or card? Both.**
Cards are widely accepted at hotels, larger restaurants, malls and many tour operators. But you'll still want cash for taxis, local restaurants, markets, tips and smaller purchases.
🏧 **Using an ATM?**
Always check the exchange rate and fees before confirming. We recently experienced a big difference between machines: a Banque Misr machine in Dahar offered a very good rate with no commission, while an Euronet machine in Hadaba charged **10% commission** for a currency exchange.
💡 Our advice: keep a few hundred Egyptian pounds in small notes and don't carry your entire holiday budget in cash.
