U17 Girls’ Academies Tournament Kicks Off in Juba Amid Leadership Absence Concerns

JUBA | Wednesday, March 18, 2026 — The South Sudan Football Federation (SSFF) officially flagged off the Under-17 Girls’ Academies Tournament this morning at Buluk Playground, marking another step in efforts to promote grassroots women’s football in the country.

However, the opening ceremony was notably overshadowed by the absence of top federation leadership, a situation that may raise concerns among stakeholders about the level of commitment and seriousness accorded to women’s football development initiatives.

Despite the leadership gap, the event attracted key representatives from within the federation’s structures, including Media Committee Chairperson Adau Leek, Women’s Football Committee Chair Susan John, and Women’s Football Development Officer Helen Terso, alongside academy officials and young players.

Strong Start on the Pitch

Action on the field lived up to expectations, with Venus Academy delivering an impressive performance to defeat Hai Baraka Academy 3–1 in the tournament’s opening fixture.

Venus Academy captain Monica Yanaial expressed delight after the victory, describing the competition as a crucial platform for young players to showcase their talent and push for future national team opportunities.

On the other side, Hai Baraka captain Zainab Ahmed Ismail remained optimistic despite the loss, commending the federation for creating an environment where players can continue to develop their technical abilities.

Tournament Overview

The competition has drawn participation from over 16 academies, all battling for top honors, with all matches scheduled to take place at Buluk Playground.

Organizers say the tournament aligns with the federation’s broader strategic vision of strengthening youth structures, particularly in the middle-age categories, while also fostering collaboration with the Ministry of Education to integrate football into school programs.

Helen Terso emphasized that the initiative forms part of a long-term plan to establish structured national competitions for girls across different age groups.

Questions Beyond the Game

While the tournament represents a positive step for women’s football, the absence of senior SSFF leadership at such a significant grassroots event has not gone unnoticed.

For many observers, this raises important questions about visibility, prioritization, and institutional backing for women’s football activities—especially at a time when the country is seeking to expand participation and competitiveness in the women’s game.

As the tournament progresses, attention will not only be on performances on the pitch but also on whether stronger institutional support will follow to match the growing enthusiasm among young female players.

Bright Stars Fall to Jamus FC in Friendly Ahead of Djibouti Clash

JUBA — South Sudan’s senior national football team, the Bright Stars, suffered a disappointing 1–0 defeat to Jamus FC of Juba on Tuesday afternoon in a friendly match played at Juba National Stadium.

The only goal of the match came from the penalty spot, converted by Ugandan International Jude Ssemugabi, handing Jamus FC currently second in the South Sudan Premier League standings a narrow victory over the national side.

The friendly encounter formed part of the Bright Stars’ preparations for their upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) preliminary qualifiers against Djibouti, scheduled to take place on 26th and 29th March 2026 at Juba National Stadium. .

Despite the presence of many supporters in the stands, South Sudan delivered an underwhelming performance throughout the match. The team struggled with tactical organization and positioning on the field, allowing Jamus FC to control several phases of the game. The lack of cohesion and clear structure raised concerns among observers about the team’s readiness for the important qualifiers.

With the decisive matches against Djibouti approaching, attention now turns to the South Sudan Football Federation, the technical bench, and the players to quickly address the tactical shortcomings and improve overall performance ahead of the crucial fixtures.

Cameroonian Cyprian Besong Ashu Returns as Interim Head Coach of South Sudan’s Bright Stars

The South Sudan Football Federation has appointed Cameroonian tactician Cyprian Besong Ashu as the Interim head coach of the South Sudan national team, the Bright Stars.

Cyprian Besong Ashu is not new to South Sudanese football. The Cameroonian previously served as the head coach of the national team between 2019 and 2021, during the first term of Francis Amin Michael as president of the federation.

His return to the Bright Stars’ technical bench is seen as a move by the federation to bring back experience and familiarity with the country’s football environment as the team prepares for upcoming international competitions.

However, the appointment has also raised questions regarding the status of former head coach Nicolas Dupuis. Up to the time of publishing this report, the South Sudan Football Federation (SSFF) has not clarified whether Dupuis resigned from his position or if his contract with the federation was formally terminated.

The absence of an official explanation about the transition has sparked debate among football stakeholders and fans, many of whom are awaiting a clear statement from the federation regarding the circumstances surrounding the change in leadership of the national team.

Observers will now be keen to see how Cyprian Besong Ashu will shape the next chapter for the Bright Stars as he begins his new tenure with the team.

Further details are expected once the federation issues an official statement. ⚽
