We’d been here for about 5 years before we even heard about this place… 🏰
Batería de Castillitos, near Cartagena, is tucked away at the top of Cabo Tiñoso and is definitely one to add to your list if you like a bit of history, exploring and incredible views.
The battery was built between 1933 and 1936 as part of the defences protecting Cartagena’s naval base. It was armed with two enormous Vickers guns (which are still there) capable of firing shells weighing almost 900kg up to around 35km. The guns were positioned to work alongside the battery at Las Cenizas to protect the naval base from attack.
You can wander around the old fortifications and take in some seriously impressive views along the coastline from around 250 metres above sea level.
It is a little tricky to find, so make sure you put Batería de Castillitos into Google Maps rather than relying on finding it by chance! I'll put the link in the comments.
There’s free parking close to the battery, and then you can have a wander around and explore.
Have you heard of this place before?
