Global Records
In the vibrant musical landscape of the 1990s, when vinyl record sales thrived, Edinburgh boasted many record stores. Among them, Global Records on Dalry Road stood out as a beloved establishment for many, including myself, especially during the zenith of the Scottish rave scene. Global wasn't just a place where you could pick up the latest Techno, House, and, in my case, Breakbeat and early Jungle 12 inches; you could purchase tape packs, pick up flyers and tickets for events like Rezerection, merchandise including jackets, t-shirts, hats and of course that vital DJ accessory slipmats.
The owners of this long-gone, much-cherished shop were brothers Jim and Dell, the latter known as DJ Dell. The store started in 1993 and continued until 1995, making it a popular destination for music enthusiasts and many budding DJs to spend, in some cases, a week's wages before rushing home to play them. Like many dance music stores of the '90s, Global Records also served as a vibrant meeting spot, a highlight of countless DJs and ravers alike.
On the shop's closing day, July 1st 1995, as we downed cans of Tennants lager whilst smoking the finest soapbar that money could buy, I took various photographs, including this one of Grant and Dell, who you would find behind the counter most days.
Dell was a very popular DJ who, I understand, had moved to New York at some stage, and last I knew, Grant was living out in North Berwick. If anyone knows Dell or Grant's whereabouts, please ask them to contact me; I'd love to hear from them. Please tag them or share this post if they are on social media.
