The 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in 2025 is a highly symbolic moment,
especially for China, which calls its role in the conflict the “War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression” (1937–1945).
Beijing has traditionally used such anniversaries not just to honor its war dead,
but also to send powerful geopolitical signals.
Here’s the analysis of what China’s show of power during this commemoration means,
particularly for the U.S. and Western powers:
1. Historical Reframing
Message: China emphasizes that it was a victor nation in WWII, not a victim.
By showcasing its role in defeating Japanese aggression,
Beijing reasserts its legitimacy as a global power with deep historical roots.
This indirectly challenges the U.S.-led narrative of postwar order,
which has often downplayed China’s contribution compared to the U.S., Soviet Union, and Britain.
2. Military Parades as Strategic Signaling
China often marks such anniversaries with grand military parades in Beijing,
displaying advanced missiles, stealth aircraft, drones, and naval power.
Message to America and the West:
“China is no longer the weak, war-torn nation of the 1940s.
We can defend our sovereignty and project power regionally and globally.”
A reminder that U.S. military presence in the Indo-Pacific will not intimidate China as it once might have.
3. Reclaiming Regional Leadership
By staging these events, Beijing positions itself as the true guardian of Asian peace,
contrasting itself against Japan (its former occupier, now a U.S. ally).
Message: Western alliances in Asia (U.S.–Japan, AUKUS, Quad) are painted as remnants of foreign intervention,
while China frames itself as the natural leader of Asia.
4. Domestic Unity and Legitimacy
Such displays also serve a domestic purpose: rallying Chinese citizens around the Communist Party,
which claims credit for resisting Japan.
To the West, this conveys political stability and national cohesion, in contrast to polarized Western democracies.
5. Implicit Challenge to U.S. Hegemony
By linking its WWII legacy with modern military prowess,
Beijing signals that it sees itself as an equal (or alternative) pole to the U.S. in global governance.
Message: “The post-1945 order created under U.S. dominance is not the only legitimate one
China, too, shaped the victory of WWII and deserves a central place in global leadership.”
✅ In summary:
China’s show of power during the WWII anniversary is more than historical remembrance.
It is a carefully crafted geopolitical statement:
To America: “Your Pacific dominance is contested
China has the history, capability, and will to stand up to you.”
To Western powers: “We are not rewriting history, we are restoring it
and reclaiming our rightful place as a global power.”
To Asia: “China is the true guarantor of peace and stability in the region, not outside powers.”
