More than just olive trees, they are regarded as works of art; nowadays, an olive tree of this kind is a luxury item – but a living one. It is considered a rarity due to its age, something few can possess; they are exclusive and unique, as no two are alike.

Today I had a question from a friend!
She planted an olive tree in her garden about 10 years ago.
And she told me, ‘My olive tree doesn’t bear fruit.’
I’ve been told it’s because it’s a garden variety...
Wrong! ❌️
As I’ve said before, there’s no such thing as a garden olive tree. ✅️
If your olive tree isn’t bearing fruit, it could be down to the climate; in warm countries where it never gets cold, the olive tree doesn’t flower – to bear fruit, it needs both heat and cold.
Without that climate, it’s possible it won’t bear fruit.
But also, some varieties of olive trees need to be pollinated; if there are no other olive trees nearby, they won’t bear fruit. When they’re close to one another, they pollinate via the wind as well as through our bees.
Without pollination, it’s not possible to have fruit.

Contrary to what some customers believe, there is no specific olive tree variety known as ‘garden olive’.
There are, however, various olive tree varieties: some are cold-hardy, whilst others are more heat-tolerant.
Some varieties produce larger fruits, others smaller ones; some have more acidic fruits, resulting in oil with higher acidity and greater yield, and although ripe, they retain a greener colour.
Other varieties, such as the Galician variety, have smaller fruit and lower yields; they are only fully ripe when they turn a very dark, almost black colour. They produce less olive oil, with lower acidity, resulting in a much higher quality final product.
But all olive trees are used for olive oil production.
Each has its own variety and characteristics.
We have all varieties and prune to the customer’s preference.

Why choose an olive tree for the garden rather than a palm tree?
For planting next to a house or a wall, the olive tree is the ideal choice in most cases due to its stable root system and manageable crown.
Palm trees, whilst attractive, have very aggressive root systems that can damage pipes and foundations, cause cracks in the walls of the house, lift paving, etc.
The choice between the two plants depends directly on the available space and the proximity to structures.

Aqui está uma oliveira, que o cliente queria o mais natural possível.
Que desse a ideia que nasceu ali, sem podas em prato ou bolas, nada artificial.
Cortámos o mínimo possível, só o que ultrapassava as medidas do camião.
Aqui está ela 2 anos depois de transplantada, com a mesma naturalidade, do local onde cresceu por centenas de anos.

Whenever a customer has grass in their garden and wishes to plant olive trees, we advise against placing the grass right next to the trunks of the olive trees or planting them above the level of the lawn, as shown in the photos.
Grass requires a lot of water, whereas olive trees need 90% less water.
This means that in order to keep the grass healthy, we will be overwatering the olive tree; over time, the roots will start to rot, the olive tree’s leaves will turn yellow and fall off, and the olive tree will eventually die.
If your garden has good drainage, simply avoid planting grass near the trunk, as shown in photo number 2. If drainage is poor, the olive tree should be planted at the same level as the grass, as shown in photo 1. This prevents the olive tree from becoming waterlogged whilst ensuring the grass receives the water it needs; both will remain healthy.
