My Observations and Recommendations Following the Oromo Intellectual Briefing on Horn Media
1. Lack of Strategic Continuity
- Observed Weaknesses:
- No summary or collective roadmap established
- Absence of a coordinating congress or organizing body
- No tactical integration mechanism for follow-up
- What Must Be Done:
- Form a transitional committee to consolidate outcomes and draft a strategic roadmap
- Convene a national congress to formalize positions and build political coherence
- Set up a permanent secretariat or working group for long-term coordination
2. Weakness in Political Strategy
- Observed Weaknesses:
- Excessive focus on critiquing the ruling party (PP) without proposing viable alternatives
- No actionable framework for regime change or structural transformation
- Discussion lacked strategic weight and resembled a wrap-up commentary
- What Must Be Done:
- Develop a transitional charter outlining steps for democratic transformation
- Frame tactical alliances and timelines for peaceful regime transition
- Conduct scenario planning sessions focused on political restructuring and movement-building
3. Unclear Selection Criteria
- Observed Weaknesses:
- No transparency in how contributors were selected
- Apparent academic bias in participation (e.g. PhDs over activists or organizers)
- Limited representation of leadership maturity and political grounding
- What Must Be Done:
- Establish inclusive selection criteria based on strategic value, not solely academic titles
- Create a nomination process that prioritizes leadership experience, accountability, and grassroots connection
- Ensure rotational participation for regional and diaspora-based voices
4. Deficient Leadership Framework
- Observed Weaknesses:
- Absence of a leadership model or future performance indicators
- Lack of a structured beginning, end, or thematic cohesion
- The session resembled a media panel, not a strategic summit
- What Must Be Done:
- Design a leadership development blueprint tailored to Oromo national aspirations
- Use thematic clusters to anchor future briefings and provide clarity
- Elevate conversations to policy labs, not passive discussion forum
5. Talking Alone Is Not Effective
- Observed Weaknesses:
- Excessive discourse without transition to mobilization
- Intellectual discussion absent of organizational discipline
- What Must Be Done:
- Convert discussion outputs into actionable communiqués
- Launch movement-building workshops and follow-up campaigns
- Use media not just for talk, but for political education and organizing.
6. Was it really about future national dialogue? Or just recycled rage?
After Abiy came to power—and while he held power—the so-called “national dialogue” wasn’t shaped by Ethiopia’s intellectuals. It echoed the frustrations of a volatile moment, fixated almost entirely on how to remove Abiy.
From its agenda to its title, the discussion lacked transformative clarity. It didn’t build pathways—it recycled old grievances dressed up as new conversations.
If we want true reform, it’s time to reclaim the space. Rhetoric alone won’t save us. Direction, depth, and deliberate design will.
