In a knee-deep water

One morning before sunrise last summer, I found myself on foot, travelling from Nyambor, a remote payam located several kilometres from Nyirol County headquarter, toward Lankien. It was the toughest journey I had undertaken after many years away from the land I still called home.

The path was harsh and unforgiving, and as the hours wore on, my blood sugar plummeted to dangerous levels. I reached a point where I could no longer lift my feet, every step feeling heavier than the last. Just when I realised I could go no further, my friend and I went to seek help from a good Samaritan whose home stood near the roadside and I was rescued.
Offering me fresh cow’s milk, my strength and spirit revived, allowing me to continue my journey through a land that tested both my endurance and my resolve.
