ZAF STRENGTHENS LEADERSHIP CAPABILITIES AMONG JUNIOR OFFICERS

The Zambia Air Force (ZAF) has intensified efforts to enhance leadership and professional competence among its Junior Officers with the commencement of a Junior Officers Course at the Air Defence School on Thursday, 27th August 2026.

The Course is intended to reinforce essential military skills, strengthen decision-making capabilities and equip Junior Officers with the leadership qualities required to effectively translate ZAF policies, orders and values into action at Formation level.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Brig Gen Passmore Madula Pasi, urged the Officers to recognise the significance of their responsibilities. He noted that the contemporary military environment requires leaders who are disciplined, ethical, knowledgeable and capable of making sound decisions under pressure. He further observed that the effectiveness of the Air Force depends largely on effective leadership at the Junior Officers level.

In emphasizing their pivotal role, Brig Gen Pasi reminded the Officers that they serve as the link between Command and ex*****on, where policies and values are put into practice.

"As Junior Officers, you occupy a critical position within the military Command structure. You are leaders at the level where policies, orders and institutional values are translated into action. Your conduct will directly influence the morale, discipline and effectiveness of the personnel under your Command," Brig Gen Pasi said.

He further encouraged the Officers to lead by example, uphold integrity and adhere to the laws and professional standards governing military service. He emphasized that effective discipline must be balanced with fairness, sound judgement and respect for lawful authority.

Brig Gen Pasi commended the ZAF Commander, Lt Gen Oscar Msitu Nyoni, for supporting the initiative, noting that sustained investment in professional development is essential to maintaining a competent and operationally ready Air Force.

The Officers were further encouraged to maximize the benefits of the Course through active participation in discussions, practical exercises and academic activities. Instructors were also tasked with delivering relevant, practical and professionally focused training.

Brig Gen Pasi also urged the participants to apply the knowledge and skills acquired beyond the classroom and in their respective Units, reminding them that professional development is a continuous process throughout their military careers.

EDU and BETin Sign MoU to Advance Biotechnology, Food Engineering and Defence Innovation
*****************************************
Bishoftu, August 17, 2026(EDU) Ethiopian Defence University (EDU) and the Bio and Emerging Technology Institute (BETin) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen collaboration in biotechnology, food engineering, scientific research, emerging technologies, innovation and capacity development.

Representing EDU, Colonel Edosa Tufa, Director General of the College of Engineering, highlighted the strategic importance of the partnership, particularly in supporting the University's planned academic programs, including Biotechnology, Food Engineering, Textile Engineering and Garment, in the 2019 E.C. academic year.

The MoU will create opportunities for joint research, laboratory-based training, expert knowledge exchange, student and staff capacity development, technology transfer and innovation, strengthening the connection between academic education and applied scientific research.

The partnership also carries strategic significance for defence and national resilience. Biotechnology and Food Engineering can contribute to areas such as food safety and security, preservation and processing technologies, nutrition, sustainable production, military food systems, environmental resilience and the development of advanced bio-based technologies.

By bringing together EDU's defence oriented education and engineering capacity with BETin's expertise in biotechnology and emerging technologies, the collaboration provides a platform for interdisciplinary research and human-capital development addressing both national development and defence-related technological challenges.

Dr. Hailu Dadi, Director General of BETin, emphasized the importance of institutional cooperation in advancing biotechnology and emerging technologies and translating scientific knowledge into practical applications.

The MoU therefore marks more than an institutional partnership; it represents a strategic step toward building an educationโ€“researchโ€“innovation ecosystem that can strengthen Ethiopia's scientific capacity, develop highly skilled professionals and contribute to technological solutions in support of food security, national development and defence resilience.

The EDUโ€“BETin partnership brings biotechnology, food engineering and defence closer togetherโ€”turning scientific knowledge into innovation and innovation into strategic national capability.
