Ethiopia and Russia Reaffirm Strategic Partnership at BRICS Summit

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 12.

Abiy said cooperation was progressing well in defence, trade, investment and education, and thanked Putin for Russia’s support for Ethiopia’s BRICS membership and scholarships for Ethiopian students.

Putin described Ethiopia as a “long-standing and reliable partner” for Russia in Africa, saying bilateral relations are developing on the principles of equality and mutual benefit. He highlighted that Russia-Ethiopia trade had more than tripled by the end of 2025 and said more than 20,000 Ethiopians have studied in Russia.

Putin also invited Abiy to the third Russia-Africa Summit in Moscow on October 28–29, where the two leaders are expected to hold another bilateral meeting.

Key areas discussed: defence and security, trade and investment, education, technology, climate and development, including cooperation ahead of COP32.

🇪🇹 Happy New Year 2019 E.C.

While much of the world is welcoming 2026, Ethiopia is celebrating the beginning of 2019.
No, Ethiopia isn’t seven years behind.
It simply follows a different calendar.

The Ethiopian calendar traces its roots to the ancient Alexandrian calendar tradition and has 13 months: 12 months of 30 days each, followed by a short 13th month of five days or six during a leap year.

The difference in the year count comes from an ancient disagreement over the calculation of the date of Jesus Christ’s birth. The Ethiopian calendar uses a calculation that places the beginning of the Christian era roughly 7–8 years later than the Gregorian calendar.

And Ethiopia’s New Year, Enkutatash, arrives on September 11 most years, or September 12 before an Ethiopian leap year.

So Ethiopia isn’t late.
It’s simply counting time differently—a calendar that has endured for centuries while empires have risen and fallen.
