Ashendye • Shadey • Solel

Ashendye, Shadey, Solel is a vibrant Amhara festival marking the end of Filseta and honoring the ascension of St. Mary. Young women, protected by local men, honor this tradition by wearing woven green river grass called Ashenda symbolizing the basket that saved Moses. and dancing in celebration of renewal, faith, and community.

The holiday goes by different names across the specific provinces and zones of the Amhara region:

Ashendye: Commonly used in Gondar, and across Bete Amhara Wollo province including Wag Hemra and Lalibela regions

Shadey: Predominantly used in the Wag Hemra zone (including Seqouta) of Bete Amhara Wollo province.

Solel: The specific term used in the Raya area of the Bete Amhara Wollo province.
