First Foreign Investment Bank joins Ethiopia’s capital market

++++++++++++++++++
: Ethiopia’s Capital Market Authority (ECMA) has granted a capital market service provider license to Nigeria-based United Capital Financial Services Ltd., marking a major milestone in the country’s financial sector reforms.

Speaking to Gazette Plus, ECMA Licensing and Registration Director Endris Selman said the firm, a member of the United Capital Group, has become the first foreign investment bank licensed to establish and operate a subsidiary in Ethiopia.

According to Endris, the company obtained the license after fulfilling all regulatory and investment requirements, including those set by the Ethiopian Investment Commission.

The license authorizes United Capital to operate as an investment bank, providing services such as financial advisory, transaction advisory, mergers and acquisitions support, and capital market-related services.

He noted that the entry of a leading Pan-African financial institution represents a historic chapter in the development of Ethiopia’s capital market and signals growing international confidence in the country’s ongoing financial sector reforms.

Endris added that Ethiopia currently has 18 licensed capital market service providers, including seven investment banks, nine securities investment advisers, and two securities market operators.

Diplomatic, humanitarian efforts facilitate return of 78,000 Ethiopians

+++++++++++++++++
: Ethiopia has facilitated the return of more than 78,000 citizens from abroad since the beginning of the year, reflecting ongoing efforts to protect vulnerable migrants and strengthen reintegration support mechanisms, according to the Ministry of Women and Social Affairs (MoWSA).

Speaking to Gazette Plus English, Dereje Tegyebelu, Chief Executive Officer for the Prevention of Trafficking in Persons and Migration at the ministry, said a total of 78,471 Ethiopians had returned home by the end of May through coordinated government and diplomatic initiatives.

The returnees arrived from a range of countries, with the majority repatriated from the Middle East, including Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Yemen. Others returned from African countries, the United States, and Myanmar.

According to Dereje, 208 Ethiopians were repatriated from Tanzania after attempting onward migration to South Africa, while 307 returned from Yemen and 31 from the United States.

He also noted that more than 1,500 Ethiopians who had been stranded in Myanmar were brought home this year through coordinated efforts involving Ethiopian diplomatic missions and international partners.

Dereje said returnees are receiving reintegration support, including healthcare services, skills training, and livelihood opportunities aimed at promoting sustainable social and economic recovery.

The repatriation initiative forms part of Ethiopia's broader citizen-centered approach, which prioritizes the safety, welfare, and dignified return of nationals facing difficult circumstances abroad.

Citizen-centered diplomacy brings 1,722 Ethiopians home

+++++++++++++++++++
: Ethiopia's citizen-centered diplomacy continues to deliver tangible results, with 1,722 nationals returning home from Saudi Arabia this week under a government-led repatriation program aimed at protecting vulnerable citizens abroad.

According to the Ministry of Women and Social Affairs, the returnees arrived on 10 flights conducted during the past week. They included 1,666 men, 48 women, and eight children. Among them were 27 minors under the age of 18.

The latest arrivals bring the total number of Ethiopians repatriated from Saudi Arabia to more than 77,000 since the nationwide return program was launched in September 2025.

The ministry said support services are being provided at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport and temporary reception centers, including care, counseling, and family reunification assistance in collaboration with relevant government institutions and development partners.

The repatriation effort forms part of Ethiopia's broader citizen-centered diplomacy agenda, which places the welfare, protection, and safe return of Ethiopians abroad at the center of the country's foreign policy engagement.

In recent years, the government has intensified diplomatic coordination with destination countries and international partners to assist vulnerable migrants, facilitate voluntary returns, and strengthen reintegration programs for returnees.

ONLF rejects claims of affiliation with armed groups

+++++++++++++++++
: The Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) categorically rejects claims of affiliation with armed groups and reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the peace agreement with the Ethiopian government confirming its readiness to fully respect and implement all provisions of the agreement.

On its recent press release, the ONLF similarly expects the Ethiopian government to uphold its commitments and ensure the full implementation of the agreement in good faith.

The peace agreement signed in Asmara on 21 October 2018 has served as the foundation for the peace and stability enjoyed in the Somali Region today. Since its ex*****on, the region has transformed into one of the most peaceful and stable regions in Ethiopia, underscoring the importance of the agreement and the commitment of all parties to maintaining lasting peace.

The ONLF believes that the Asmara peace agreement has brought significant benefits for the Somali Region and the wider Horn of Africa. Furthermore, it has contributed positively to the realization of many of the objectives that the ONLF has historically pursued.

Accordingly, the ONLF strongly opposes any action or behavior that could undermine the peace, stability and development achieved in the Somali Region. It also firmly rejects the unauthorized use of its name by a handful of individuals who, having failed to realize their personal ambitions through the peace agreement, are attempting to incite a new conflict.

The ONLF believes that such efforts neither reflect its principles nor serve the interests of the Somali Region and its people. Instead, they undoubtedly undermine the hard-won peace and stability in the region while advancing agendas that are external to the region and contrary to the legitimate aspirations of the people in the Somali Region.

In addition, the ONLF wishes to clarify to all interested parties that it has not entered into any alliance with other organizations for the purpose of overthrowing the current Ethiopian government. Nor has it never been the objective of the ONLF to fight for the removal of the ruling government or to engage with organizations whose sole aim is to seize state power through armed means.

The ONLF’s mission has always been concentrated on advancing the rights, interests, and aspirations of the people of the Somali Region. It remains committed to pursuing these objectives through peaceful and democratic means, based on dialogue and mutually agreed principles.

Therefore, the ONLF once again reiterates that it has no affiliation, cooperation, or involvement with armed groups that are engaged in conflict against the Ethiopian government. The ONLF remains fully committed to the peaceful engagements and rejects any actions that threaten peace, stability, and the interests of the people of the Somali Region.

The ONLF further clarifies that its name has been misused by Mr. Abdirahman Mahdi, the former chairman of the party, who has acted independently and without authorization from the ONLF party. Mr. Abdirahman Mahdi no longer holds any leadership position within the ONLF party and does not represent the party, its policies, or its objectives.

At the ONLF Congress held in Jigjiga in June 2025, Mr. Abdirahman Mahdi was formally relieved from the chairmanship, and Mr. Abdikarim Sheikh Muse was duly elected as the new chairman of the ONLF party. Consequently, any actions undertaken, decisions made, or statements issued by Mr. Abdirahman Mahdi after that date do not reflect the official position of the ONLF party and should be regarded as his personal views and activities.

The ONLF party also wishes to clarify that the X (formally Twitter) account know as is not an official account of the party. It is a personal account operated by Mr. Abdirahman Mahdi, and the content published through that account does not represent the official policies, positions, or communications of the ONLF party.

The ONLF urges all interested parties, supporters, media organizations, and members of the public to exercise caution and to rely only on officially authorized channels for information regarding the party’s positions and activities.

Jimma University on the cusp of full autonomy

++++++++++++++++++++++
: Jimma University is on the brink of becoming a self-governing institution, pending a new proclamation from the Council of Ministers after three years of preparation inspired by global autonomous universities.

Teklu Tafesse, (PhD), Head of the President’s Office and Senior Advisor of Institution Reform Affairs, told the Ethiopian Press Agency that the university is ready to commence self-governing operations once the proclamation is received, though he anticipated a transition period of one to two years.

Over the past three years since the university autonomy proclamation, Jimma University has developed self-governing policies, drafted institutional reform directives, and reviewed them with the board and stakeholders before submitting them to the Ministry of Education. The self-governing process encompassed a thorough review of academic activities, institutional structure, resource management, and financial autonomy.

The university also assessed its capital, prepared a research document, and secured board approval before submitting it to the Ministry of Education. A neutral board organized by the Ministry reviewed the university’s progress and acknowledged its efforts, with final results still pending, Tiklu elaborated.

To generate income beyond the government’s budget, Jimma University has implemented financial strategies such as exporting agricultural products, promoting medical tourism in East Africa through its ultramodern hospital, and expanding its campuses across the region. It currently operates a campus in Somaliland and plans to establish another in South Sudan.

As part of its self-governing initiative, Jimma University dedicates 35% of its efforts to preparing an educational roadmap. It is also developing high-demand fields of study, some of which require international recognition, with discussions underway with American and French recognition providers. Some programs are set to commence next year, with others following in subsequent years, Tiklu remarked.

Why St. Joseph's Young Researchers Give Me Hope

++++++++++++++++
: We call them Gen Z, yet we still struggle to understand what that really means.

This is the first generation born fully into the digital world—shaped, trained, and sometimes trapped by screens.

The question is no longer whether they are “tech-savvy,” but whether we are raising them with enough balance to stay human in a hyper-digital age.

Parents of this generation carry a difficult responsibility: allowing their children to grow within their natural digital environment while also protecting them from the risks of excessive use, including what the WHO refers to as Internet Gaming Disorder. It is, undeniably, a demanding balance. Isn’t it?

Addis revitalizes 49 km of riverbanks

+++++++++++++++++++
: The Addis Ababa City Administration’s Environmental Protection Authority has announced the development of 49 kilometers of riverbanks.

The Authority’s Director General, Eshetu Lemma (PhD), informed the Ethiopian Press Agency that efforts are underway to enhance the city’s green coverage from its current 24 percent to 30 percent.

He emphasized the utilization of indigenous knowledge from the Konso community for soil and water conservation initiatives.

Furthermore, the he noted the reduction and replacement of water-intensive eucalyptus trees with biodiversity-friendly indigenous trees. He highlighted the project’s significant positive impact on the community, which previously experienced severe annual flooding.

Residents residing in high-risk zones have been legally relocated to more suitable residential areas.

Eshetu further explained that rivers previously carrying toxic liquid waste are now free from pollution, and newly constructed pedestrian and bicycle paths have provided alternative transportation options.

He further stated that efforts will be made to ensure the community assumes ownership of this river development project to safeguard it from waste and destruction.
