Addis Ababa sees gains in Grade 6 citywide exam
+++++++++++++++++
- The Addis Ababa City Administration Education Bureau has reported improved results in the 2024/25 Grade 6 citywide leaving examination, with 95% of students scoring 50% and above—up from 94.3% in 2023/24 and 80.2% in 2022/23.
At a press briefing today, Bureau Head Zelalem Mulatu (PhD) said 75,085 out of 79,034 students who sat for the exam met the passing threshold, qualifying for promotion to Grade 7. The benchmark was set at 50% for general students and 45% for students with disabilities, as approved by the bureau’s general council.
Among the 734 participating schools, 381 recorded a 100% pass rate. Public schools accounted for 94.1% of students scoring above 50%, while private schools registered 98.6%, reflecting what officials described as a narrowing performance gap. Notably, four of the top five highest-scoring students came from public schools.
Zelalem attributed the gains to targeted interventions, including enhanced school monitoring, expanded access to learning materials, and a strategic focus on core subjects such as mathematics and English. He also cited the impact of the student feeding program and broader access to educational content via television, radio, and social media platforms.
He noted that 96% of regular students, 79.6% of extension students, and 100% of privately registered students passed the exam. The Grade 6 exit exam has been administered since the 2022/23 academic year under Ethiopia’s new education roadmap.
Zelalem said the bureau is now working to replicate this success in the ongoing Grade 12 university entrance examinations.
