Ethiopia sets 99% e-vehicle import goal

• Plans to boost stock to 500,000
+++++++++++++++++++++++++
: The Ministry of Transport and Logistics (MoTL) is spearheading efforts to integrate sustainable green mobility solutions, with a bold target to import 99% electric vehicles (e-vehicles) within the next decade.

In an exclusive interview with Gazette Plus English, MoTL State Minister Bareo Hassen outlined the country’s commitment to an electric revolution, supported by robust policy frameworks and incentives, to foster a climate-resilient economy.

Currently, Ethiopia boasts over 100,000 e-vehicles, accounting for 7% of its total vehicle stock. Baro announced plans to increase this number to over 500,000 within the next ten years. The national strategic plan addresses key barriers to the e-vehicle strategy, such as the development of charging infrastructure, electrification, and digital capabilities.

The National Electric Vehicles Implementation Strategy emphasized public-private partnerships, offering incentives like tax exemptions, land allocation, and various forms of financial and non-financial support, the state minister elaborated.

Baro indicated that collaborations with energy and financial institutions, alongside the private sector, are underway to enhance the value chain and assembly processes. This initiative aims to introduce local brands, build customer confidence, and overcome communication challenges.

The state minister also highlighted Ethiopia’s abundant natural resources, noting that natural gas is being explored as a renewable energy alternative to support a pollution-free economy and a resilient transport sector.

ENDC engages diaspora in key sessions across 5 nations

+++++++++++++++++++++++++
: The Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission (ENDC) Chief Commissioner Professor Mesfin Araya announced that the commission has successfully engaged with Ethiopians living abroad, gathering valuable dialogue agendas.

Prof. Mesfin noted that the commission conducted discussions in countries with significant Ethiopian populations, including the United States, Canada, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United Arab Emirates.

These diaspora communities actively participated, addressing critical issues such as the reasons for their emigration and electing representatives for future dialogue stages, he added.

The chief commissioner further emphasized that the ENDC’s role is to facilitate an inclusive and transparent process, rather than determining the dialogue content.

While the majority of the diaspora has embraced the initiative, some have voiced concerns, often due to misunderstandings or personal interests. According to Prof. Mesfin,opposition remains minimal compared to the widespread support for the dialogue.

AfEMA praises Ethiopia’s bold steps in electrifying vehicles

++++++++++++++++++++++++++
: The Africa E-Mobility Alliance (AfEMA) has recognized Ethiopia’s broader initiatives, which demonstrate Africa’s potential to lead and instill greater hope in African nations to redefine the continent’s future.

Approached by Gazette Plus English, Warren Ondanje, the Managing Director of AfEMA, expressed Ethiopia’s significant progress in advancing e-mobility. He emphasized that this progress not only benefits African nations but also serves as a beacon of hope, showcasing Africa’s ability to lead the energy transition.

Odanje highlighted Ethiopia’s comprehensive policy frameworks, particularly the ban on the importation of fossil-fueled vehicles. This move makes Ethiopia the first country to fully commit to electrifying its vehicles, a global achievement.

Furthermore, Ethiopia has become home to the fastest chargers in Africa, a development that he believes is crucial for building consumer confidence.

Odanje underscored that the e-mobility shift is not merely an environmental imperative but also an economic necessity. By reducing dependencies on imported fossil fuels, it creates new jobs in sectors such as manufacturing, assembly, and maintenance. Additionally, it addresses Africa’s transport, energy, and environmental challenges by tapping into abandoned natural resources and unlocking investments locally and beyond.

Expressing his belief in Ethiopia’s position at the forefront of the energy transition, Ondanje pledged AfEMA’s support. He also committed to providing the necessary information to governments that embrace this technology, ensuring Ethiopia’s continued leadership in line with the vision of Africans becoming global champions.

Trump hosts White House Dinner honoring Ballroom Donors,

++++++++++++++++++++++++
: President Donald Trump hosted a glittering “Legacy Dinner” at the White House on Wednesday night to thank high-dollar donors and investors for financing his $200 million ballroom project, a 90,000-square-foot expansion he says will “showcase America’s greatness,” CNN reported.

According to CNN, Trump told guests the project is now “fully funded,” describing it as a historic addition that will allow “tens of thousands” to attend events annually. The president said the new ballroom would prevent future presidents from hosting dignitaries under temporary tents, joking that past dinners sometimes ended “with rainwater over your shoes.”

Representatives from major corporations — including Lockheed Martin, Microsoft, Meta, Google, Amazon, T-Mobile, Palantir, and Tether — attended the dinner, alongside prominent figures such as the Winklevoss twins, Newsmax anchor Greta Van Susteren, and former Trump chief of staff Reince Priebus.

Trump displayed renderings of the ballroom, adorned with crystal chandeliers, marble floors, and gold columns, and hinted at a second project — an “Independence Arch” to mark America’s 250th anniversary. He also said parts of the construction and decoration are being donated, boasting that the project might come “under budget.”

Meanwhile, other nations have also recently turned to civic participation to fund development projects.

In Ethiopia, for instance, the government’s “Dine for Sheger” and “Dine for Nation” campaigns have mobilized thousands of citizens and diaspora contributors to back urban beautification and tourism initiatives.

Launched in 2019 under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD), Dine for Sheger began as a public-private effort to revitalize Addis Ababa’s rivers, parks, and public spaces.

The later Dine for Nation campaign expanded that approach to regional destinations such as the Gorgora Project near Lake Tana, aiming to boost tourism and local economies.

Ethiopia’s green economy create millions of eco-friendly jobs

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++
: Ethiopia is pioneering environmentally friendly employment through mega projects like the GERD, Green Legacy initiative, and electric car programs, according to the Policy Studies Institute (PSI).

A two-year PSI research project, “Green Jobs and Young People in Ethiopia,” revealed that environmental jobs are a major part of Ethiopia’s employment landscape. Since the 2011 launch of the Climate-Resilient Green Economy (CRGE) strategy, Ethiopia’s green economy efforts have expanded green jobs. The 2019 Green Legacy initiative planted billions of trees and created nearly a million jobs.

The research project Team Leader Professor Tassew Woldehana presented findings on employment categories, noting that fully green jobs make up 10.6%, partially green jobs 26%, environmentally neutral jobs 46.1%, and non-green jobs 15.6%.

Prof. Tassew also emphasized that a significant portion of Ethiopia’s jobs are either green or non-polluting, with the country expanding green jobs through national mega projects and initiatives.

Key national projects like the GERD, the Green Legacy Initiative, and the e-mobility initiative promote green employment for youth and climate-resilient economic growth, he added.

Alebel Dessie, Deputy Director General of the PSI, highlighted the need for integrated responses to unemployment and climate change, focusing on youth-oriented and environmentally sustainable job creation.

The PSI project, in collaboration with the MasterCard Foundation across four African countries—Ethiopia, Ghana, Uganda, and South Africa—examined youth experiences and aspirations in green employment.
