Twenty-five years after a heart surgeon saved Mesfin's life, the two met again - now they're saving lives together...
Mesfin Dollar grew up in a small village in Ethiopia, and by the time he was 11, he was a very ill little boy.
Local doctors couldn't help, so he travelled to the capital, Addis Ababa, where a charity arranged for him to have heart surgery in the US.
So at the age of 15 Mesfin flew to Atlanta, US, and had two life-saving heart surgeries at the hands of Dr Jim Kauten.
"I thought I was going to die," says Mesfin. "And Jim Kauten, Dr Jim Kauten, he was able to save me."
As for Jim - saving lives is his calling.
"You know, about midway into my career, I kind of realised I was put on this earth to do heart surgery and to help people," he says.
Mesfin remained in the US, and when he grew up he decided to become a cardiac perfusionist, operating the life support machines used during surgical procedures like the one he'd had as a child.
"I've been on that operating table and I know what it's like to be a patient - the fear, all the flashbacks," he says. "I decided at that moment to be a cardiac perfusionist and be able to help others."
Mesfin followed his aims full-circle. He decided to volunteer for Heart Attack Ethiopia - without realising that Jim had decided to do the same.
"We were both a bit surprised when we saw each other. This is like an incredible life circle moment. We re-bonded so quickly," says Mesfin
Jim still remembered Mesfin from all those years ago. "He was a very determined, charming child. He was easy to like," he says.
But this time, the two men were on a mission together.
"We were able to pick up where we left off, but before I was his patient, and now we are going to save another life," says Mesfin.
They've since completed four missions and saved over 400 lives together. They're also training local heart surgery teams to save lives on the ground.
Jim says he's so proud of Mesfin:
"I applaud Mesfin for taking time out of his busy life and career and going back home and paying back. I'm very proud of him for what he's done."
For Mesfin, working with Jim is everything he's ever dreamed of.
"It's a dream come true. Just working along with a surgeon who operated on me once, and now we're operating together, helping others, it’s such a wonderful meaning," he says.
Now, their relationship goes deeper than former doctor and patient. "He claims me as his fourth father,” says Jim. “So that's an honour in and by itself.”
"It's such an amazing privilege that we have," says Mesfin. "To be together and to serve together, I am just so beyond thankful."
