A capacitor bank is a group of capacitors connected together in parallel or series (usually parallel) to store electrical energy and provide reactive power to an electrical system.

🔌 Purpose of a Capacitor Bank

1. Power Factor Correction (PFC):

In AC systems, especially in industries, many loads (like motors) draw reactive power.

Capacitor banks provide this reactive power, reducing the burden on the power supply and improving the power factor.

This reduces energy losses and avoids penalties from utility companies.

2. Voltage Stabilization:

Capacitors support voltage levels during load changes.

3. Reduce Losses:

Less reactive power from the grid = reduced transmission losses.

4. Increase System Capacity:

Freeing up capacity in transformers and lines for more useful (active) power.

⚙️ Types of Capacitor Banks

Fixed Capacitor Bank: Always connected to the system.

Automatic (Switched) Capacitor Bank: Uses controllers to connect/disconnect capacitors based on load demand.

Harmonic Filter Banks: Designed to eliminate harmonic distortions as well as correct power factor.

🧮 Basic Example

If a factory has many induction motors that cause a low power factor (say 0.7), a capacitor bank is installed to supply reactive power (kVAR), which brings the power factor closer to 1.0, reducing the total current drawn.

Solar Photovoltaic System Diagram:
1. Solar Panels
There are 2 solar panels connected parallel.
Each panel has a power of 300W, a voltage of 37–54V and an 8A current.
2. DCDB Box (DC Distribution Box)
It is used to protect and distribute energy from solar panels.
Includes automatic switches and a ground connection (green symbol).
3. PWM charge controller
Regulate energy from solar panels to batteries to avoid overloading or deep discharges.
It has a digital display for monitoring and USB ports.
4. Automatic DC Continuous Switch (DC MCB 50A)
Protect the overflow system between the charge controller and the batteries.
5. Batteries
There are 2 batteries of 12V and 100Ah each, connected in parallel to keep the voltage to 12V and increase the total capacity to 200Ah.
6. 3 KVA Inverter
Converts DC (DC) batteries to 230V AC to power a home.
7. Home
Represents the charge or final use of the solar system. Energy converted by the inverter is used to power household electrical appliances.
