Early this morning, an Anyuak armed group, operating in coordination with Anyuak fighters from Pochalla County in the Greater Pibor Administrative Area of Jonglei State (South Sudan), launched a coordinated attack against Nuer civilians in Itang Special Woreda, Tharpam Sub-City, Gambella Region.

This attack occurred immediately after Nuer government officials ordered Nuer civilians who had mobilized themselves to come to Gambella to rescue their beloved family members in Berberthab Mender, Gambella to return home. These civilians had gone solely to rescue and protect their loved ones following the ambush of their family members in Abol Woreda.

This pattern is not new. It mirrors the same deadly tactic used two years ago, when the Gambella regional government publicly called for peace and persuaded Nuer civilians to return to the Nuer Zone, while Anyuak armed groups were allegedly being secretly mobilized and preparing attacks. This later resulted in the massacre of Nuer civilians in Puldeng.

Just yesterday, Nuer senior government officials were again convinced, through meetings and assurances, to return peacefully to their homes. At the same time, evidence indicates that Anyuak armed forces were actively preparing for war.

This morning’s attack on Tharpam Kebele did not occur in isolation. It reportedly took place with the full awareness and alleged complicity of certain Anyuak politicians and officials within the Gambella regional government.

The Nuer community strongly condemns this calculated violence, the repeated deception carried out under the guise of “peace,” and the continued failure of authorities to protect innocent civilians. These acts constitute organized violence and ethnic targeting, and they must be addressed with urgency, accountability, and decisive action by regional, federal, and international bodies.

Dear Naath (Nuer)

Our families in the Gambella Region are facing unbearable hardship. Mothers, fathers, children, and elders have been displaced from their homes. Some are wounded, some are sick, and many lack even the most basic necessities. These are not strangers. They are our people. They are our blood.

In moments like this, history does not ask who is rich or poor, young or old. It asks one simple question: Did you stand with your people when they needed you most?

As students and future leaders of the Naath (Nuer) community, we may not yet have power or wealth but we have something just as important: unity, compassion, and responsibility. Even a small contribution, when combined with many others, becomes a powerful force for healing and hope.

የኑዌር ወጣቶች መግለጫ
በጋምቤላ ክልል ውስጥ በቀጠለው የደህንነት መረበሽ ጉዳይ ላይ

እኛ የጋምቤላ ኑዌር ወጣቶች፣ በጋምቤላ ክልል ውስጥ እየተጨመረ ያለውን የደህንነት መዘናጋት በጥልቅ እናሳስባለን። በቅርቡ በንጹሃን ዜጎች በተለይም በሴቶችና በህፃናት ላይ የተፈጸመውን ጥቃት በግልፅ እና በጽኑ እንከታተላለን። እነዚህ ጥቃቶች ኦሮሞ፣ የደቡብ ክልሎች፣ ማጃንግ፣ ኦፖ፣ ኮሞ እና ሌሎች ለረጅም ጊዜ በሰላምና በአብሮነት የኖሩ ማህበረሰቦችን አድኖ ነው የመታቸው። እነዚህ ወንጀሎች ፈጽሞ የማይታገሱ ሲሆን፣ ሰላምን፣ የሰው ክብርን እና ብሔራዊ አንድነትን የሚያከብሩ ኢትዮጵያውያን ሁሉ ሊከሉአቸው ይገባል።

በተለይ በአምቡላንሶች፣ በህዝብ ትራንስፖርት አውቶቡሶች እና በፋይናንስ ተቋማት ላይ የባንክ ኃላፊዎችን ግድያ ጨምሮ በአቦል ወረዳ፣ በኢታንግ ልዩ ወረዳ እና በጋምቤላ ከተማ የተፈጸመው የተደራጀ ጥቃት እጅግ ያስጨንቃል። እነዚህ እርምጃዎች መሠረታዊ አገልግሎቶችን ለመከልከል እና የክልሉን ኢኮኖሚያዊና ማህበራዊ መረጋጋት ለማበላሸት የተደረጉ መሆናቸውን ያሳያሉ።

እነዚህ የጥቃት ተግባራት በ«የጋምቤላ ሕዝብ ነፃነት ንቅናቄ (GPLM)» ወይም «ጋይናን» ተብሎ በሚጠራ የታጠቁ ተቃዋሚ ቡድኖች ጥቅም ብቻ የሚያገለግሉ ናቸው። እነዚህ በጽንፈኛ አካላት የተመሠረቱ ቡድኖች በንጹሃን ላይ እና በመንግስት ተቋማት ላይ የታጠቁ ጥቃቶችን ሲፈጽሙ መጥተዋል፤ እንዲሁም ቀድሞ አገሪቱን ወደ ከባድ ጥፋት ያመጡ ኃይሎች እንዲመለሱ በግልፅ ጥሪ እያቀረቡ ነው። ዓላማቸው ሰላምን ማበላሸት፣ ክልሉን ማረበሽ እና በጋምቤላ እየተካሄዱ ያሉ የልማት ጥረቶችን ማቋረጥ ነው።

እጅግ አሳሳቢ የሆነው ደግሞ በስደተኞች ካምፖች ላይ የተፈጸመው ጥቃት ነው። እነዚህ ተግባራት የዓለም አቀፍ ሰብአዊ ህግን በከፊል የሚጥሱ ናቸው። ስደተኞች በኢትዮጵያ ፌዴራል መንግስት እና በዩናይትድ ኔሽንስ የስደተኞች ኮሚሽን (UNHCR) ጥበቃ ስር ይገኛሉ። በደህንነታቸው ላይ የሚፈጸም ማንኛውም ጥቃት በሰብዓዊነት ላይ ጥቃት ነው እና በማንኛውም ሁኔታ ሊታገስ አይችልም።

እነዚህን አደጋዎች በፊት ቆመን፣ ህይወትን፣ ንብረትን እና የአባቶቻችንን መሬት ለመጠበቅ ማህበረሰባችን በራሱ መከላከል እርምጃ ለመውሰድ ተግዶ ነው። ይህ ሁኔታ ኢትዮጵያ ለብሔራዊ ምርጫ በምትዘጋጅበት ወቅት መከሰቱ እጅግ አሳሳቢ ነው፤ ምርጫ ሕዝብን ሊያንድ እንጂ በጥቃትና በማስፈራራት ሊፈርስ አይገባም። እነዚህ የታጠቁ ቡድኖች በጋምቤላ ውስጥ በብልጽግና ፓርቲ ውስጥ ትልቅ ድርሻ ያላቸውን የኑዌር ህዝብ ፖለቲካዊ ተሳትፎ ለመከልከል እየሞከሩ መሆናቸው ግልፅ ነው።

እንዲሁም ኢትዮጵያን ለማረበሽ የሚሞክሩ ኃይሎች ሰላምንና ሕገ-መንግስታዊ ሥርዓትን የሚቃወሙ የታጠቁ እንቅስቃሴዎችን በመደገፍ እየተሳተፉ መሆናቸው እጅግ ያሳስባል። በዚህ መሠረት፣ ከኢትዮጵያ ብሔራዊ መከላከያ ሠራዊት (ENDF) ጎን ቆመን የሀገራችንን ሉዓላዊነት፣ አንድነት እና የግዛት ትክክለኛነት ለመጠበቅ የፌዴራል ዴሞክራሲያዊ ሪፐብሊክ ኢትዮጵያ ጠቅላይ ሚኒስትር ክቡር ዶ/ር አብይ አህመድን የምንደግፍ መሆናችንን እናረጋግጣለን።

በጋምቤላ እና በመላው ኢትዮጵያ ያሉ ማህበረሰቦች ሁሉ ጥቃትን እንዲክዱ፣ ውይይትን እንዲቀበሉ እና ለዘላቂ ሰላም፣ ፍትህ እና ልማት በአንድነት እንዲሰሩ ጥሪ እናቀርባለን። የክልላችንና የአገራችን ወደፊት በአንድነት፣ በእርስ በእርስ ክብር እና የማንኛውም ዜጋ መብት ጥበቃ—የዘር፣ የሃይማኖት ወይም የማንነት ልዩነት ሳይኖር—ላይ የተመሰረተ ነው።

ሰላም ሊረጋ የሚችለው ሁሉም ወገኖች በቅንነት ሲያከብሩት ብቻ ነው። ነገር ግን ጽንፈኛ የታጠቁ ቡድኖች ከውይይት ይልቅ ጥቃትን መምረጣቸውን ቀጥለዋል፣ ይህም የክልላችንን ተስፋ ያለውን ሰላም እየነገደ ነው።

በእነዚህ አሳፋሪ የጥቃት ተግባራት ምክንያት የጠፉ ንጹሃን ሕይወቶች ሁሉ ፍትሕ እንዲገኝ እንጠይቃለን።
የጋምቤላ ሕዝብ ሰላም ይገባዋል።
ኢትዮጵያ መረጋጋት ይገባታል።
የሕዝብ ድምፅ በሽብር አይዝረጋም።

PRESS STATEMENT BY NUER YOUTH

ON THE ONGOING SECURITY DESTABILIZATION IN THE GAMBELLA REGION

We, the Nuer Youth of Gambella, express our deepest concern over the escalating insecurity in the Gambella Region. We strongly condemn the recent violent attacks against innocent civilians particularly women and children affecting diverse communities including Oromo, Southern Nations, Majang, Opo, Komo, and others who have long lived together in peace and coexistence. These criminal acts are unacceptable and must be rejected by all Ethiopians who value peace, human dignity, and national unity.

We are especially alarmed by the deliberate targeting of ambulances, public buses, and financial institutions, including the killing of bank managers, across areas such as Abol Woreda, Itang Special Woreda, and Gambella town. These actions demonstrate a calculated attempt to paralyze essential services and sabotage the economic and social stability of our region.

Such acts of violence serve only the interests of armed opposition groups operating under the name Gambella People’s Liberation Movement (GPLM), also known as the Gainan party. These groups, formed by extremist elements, have waged armed attacks against civilians and state institutions while openly calling for the return of forces that previously plunged the country into devastation. Their actions are aimed at undermining peace, destabilizing the region, and derailing the development efforts underway in Gambella.

Of grave concern are also the attacks on refugee camps. These acts constitute serious violations of international humanitarian law. Refugees fall under the protection of the Federal Government of Ethiopia and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Any attack on their safety is an attack on humanity itself and cannot be tolerated under any circumstances.

Faced with these threats, our community has been compelled to act in self-defense to protect lives, property, and our ancestral land. These challenges arise at a critical moment as Ethiopia prepares for national elections, a democratic process that should unite citizens not be undermined by violence and intimidation. It is evident that these armed groups seek to prevent the political participation of the Nuer people, who constitute a significant constituency within the Prosperity Party in Gambella.

We are further alarmed by the involvement of forces that seek to destabilize Ethiopia by supporting armed movements opposed to peace and constitutional order. In this regard, we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to stand alongside the Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF) and support the leadership of H.E. Dr. Abiy Ahmed, Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, in defending our nation’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.

We call upon all communities in Gambella and across Ethiopia to reject violence, embrace dialogue, and work collectively toward lasting peace, justice, and development. The future of our region and our country depends on unity, mutual respect, and the protection of every citizen—regardless of ethnicity, religion, or background.

Peace can only prevail when all parties commit to it in good faith. Unfortunately, armed extremist groups continue to choose violence over dialogue, threatening the fragile peace of our region.

We demand justice for all innocent lives lost due to these senseless acts of violence.
The people of Gambella deserve peace.
Ethiopia deserves stability.
And the voices of civilians must never be silenced by terror.
