After a long slump, Finland's retail sales are finally showing signs of recovery.

But there's a catch.

Finland's spell of warm summer weather is expected to end this weekend as a low-pressure system moves in from the southwest, bringing widespread rain, stronger winds and lower temperatures across much of the country.

Friday is forecast to remain mostly dry, with sunshine in many areas and temperatures reaching 25°C or higher in parts of central and western Finland. Isolated showers are possible in northern regions.

Finland has turned down the vast majority of seasonal work visa applications submitted by foreign workers seeking employment in the country's wild-berry harvesting industry, citing concerns over potential labour exploitation and employers' ability to meet legal obligations.

According to the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, around 2,200 applications for seasonal work visas have been received for the 2026 berry-picking season. Authorities have processed roughly 1,600 applications so far, rejecting approximately 1,400 of them.

Finnish police are appealing for information about an 18-year-old Indian engineering student who disappeared after travelling from Lahti to Helsinki more than two months ago.

The student boarded a Z train from Lahti to Helsinki at around 5pm on 5 May. His last confirmed sighting was at a K-Market in Helsinki's Kruunuvuorenranta district later that evening. He has not been seen since.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the National Bureau of Investigation. A photograph of the missing student is available on the Finnish police website.

An agreement has been reached between the wellbeing services county of North Savo and 10 out of a group of 12 foreign healthcare workers who were dismissed last year during their probationary periods.

The county made the decision to dismiss the workers because, in the view of the welfare authority, their professional and language skills were not up to the expected standard. All 12 workers had been recruited from abroad.

Some of the workers however later told Yle in an interview that they were fired because of discrimination, and not because of a lack of professional or language skills. They subsequently decided to take the North Savo healthcare authority to court.
