Last April, we travelled to Laax, Switzerland, to see what happens when 🔬science meets 🏂 sport. The halfpipe is a free playground for athletes, but also uncharted territory for scientists.

How can a halfpipe athlete spin four times in the air before landing perfectly?

Every detail matters, from speed to knee angle.
German scientists and Olympic snowboarders were teaming up to decode the perfect halfpipe jump.

⛰ In Laax, riders were tracked with sensors in their boards, boots, and suits. Their moves turned into
3D models revealing what the eye can’t see.

Can science help snowboarders reach new heights?
Or is style something you can’t measure?

❄️Last April, we filmed the athletes of training with scientists from and at one of the world’s most iconic halfpipes in Laax, Switzerland.❄️

🏂 Riders’ goal: get medals in the Olympics
🔬 Scientists’ goal: to capture every movement, force, and micro-adjustment that happens when a snowboarder hits the halfpipe — using high-speed cameras, sensors, and biomechanical analysis.

After many months of work, tomorrow we are concluding our science project, with the projections of the 3 short documentaries produced with the support of the Finnish Committee for Public Information.
