Nokia is deepening its push into defence by partnering with Finnish AI firm NestAI in a €100 million investment round backed by Nokia and state-owned investor Tesi.

Under the new Nokia Defence unit, the companies plan to build “AI-native” tech for unmanned systems, secure sensing networks and command-and-control tools for military and national security use.

The deal comes soon after Nvidia’s $1 billion stake in Nokia to co-develop AI-native networks, positioning the Finnish group as a key European player in defence and network AI.

President Alexander Stubb says the government will formally discuss the 28-point draft peace framework for ending the war in Ukraine.

Writing on X, Stubb said the proposal, which surfaced yesterday, is being assessed “together with our allies and with Ukraine”. He noted that he has already spoken with the prime minister and foreign minister and will now take the matter to the full government for discussion.

The leaked 28-point plan, drafted mainly by US and Russian officials with limited Ukrainian input, would reportedly ask Kyiv to give Russia complete control over Donetsk and Luhansk, accept limits on the size and capabilities of its armed forces and on Western military support, and recognise Russian language and church demands.

Sweden’s foreign minister, Maria Malmer Stenergard, says Nordic countries are carrying a disproportionately large share of the military support for Ukraine and warns that this is “not fair and not sustainable in the long run”.

She points to data from the Kiel Institute showing that countries like Denmark have pledged support worth close to 3% of GDP since 2022, while some larger EU states remain below 0.2%.

Stenergard argues that using frozen Russian assets is the only realistic way to secure long-term, more even burden-sharing, noting that the EU has spent more on Russian energy imports since the full-scale invasion than on helping Ukraine.

She says December’s EU summit will be critical for agreeing on a new financing model.

Finland’s Left Alliance has updated its party programme to support the legalisation of cannabis use and its sale through state-owned shops, Helsingin Sanomat reports.

The move – which also includes limited home growing – shifts the party from backing only decriminalisation to being the second parliamentary party, after the Greens, to support full legalisation.

At the same congress, the Left Alliance also backed a €15 minimum hourly wage and new measures to improve job security for people in non-standard work.
