"You shouldn't try to get the best sauna on the block; you want to get the block into the sauna." — Mikkel Aaland

In March 2014, a quiet revolution took place at Archimedes Banya in San Francisco. Known as the Perfect Sweat Summit, this invite-only gathering brought together 50 of the world's foremost sweat aficionados, builders, and cultural historians.

Moderated by "sweat guru" Mikkel Aaland (author of the 1978 cult classic Sweat), this was the "Big Bang" for the modern North American sauna renaissance. This footage captures the raw energy of an industry moving from the fringes to the mainstream—transitioning from a hidden wellness trend into a unified community focused on authenticity, health, and social connection.

What you’ll see in this historic footage:

🔥 The Global Brain Trust: Use the flame to represent the "Big Bang" and the intense passion of the original 50 experts.

🪵 The "Sauna Extension" Concept: Use the wood log to ground the conversation in authentic materials and building.

⚒️ Legacy & Craftsmanship: Use the hammer/tools to highlight the builders and the "work" of creating a culture.

🗣️ Cultural Advocacy: Use the speaking head to show that this was a meeting of minds and ideas.

Featuring:
▸ Mikkel Aaland – Host of the Perfect Sweat series and author of the 1978 classic, Sweat.
▸ Mika Hotakainen – Acclaimed Finnish Director of Steam of Life.
▸ Glenn Auerbach – Founder of Sauna Times and host of the Sauna Talk podcast.
▸ Mikhail Brodsky – Visionary founder of Archimedes Banya.
▸ Jarmo Lehtola – Expert guide and Finnish sauna advocate, Finnish Sauna Society.
▸ Lasse Eriksen – Norwegian sauna master and leader in the Badstulaug movement, member of the board at the International Sauna Association, and co-host of the Norway episode of the Perfect Sweat series.
▸ Molly Reichert & John Pederson – Architects and pioneers of the mobile sauna movement (612 Sauna Society). (Molly's website)
▸ Michael Nordskog – Author of The Opposite of Cold.
▸ Matt Wiggins – Expert in holistic health systems and wellness advocacy.
▸ Clint Carlson – Custom sauna builder and industry craftsman.
▸ Perry Garfinkel – Journalist and Author of Becoming Ghandi: My Experiment Living the Mahatma’s 6 Moral Truths in Immoral Times.
▸ Mary Bemis – Founder and Author of Insider's Guide to Spa's
▸ Nell Waters – Founder of Sweat Temples, and Author of Water. Heat. People
▸ Crystal Carlson – founder of Ladywell’s Vitality Spa, Greenwood (lost due to the pandemic)
▸ Irem Goroglu & Larry Holeman – representing Banya 5, Seattle, WA
▸ Phil Cousineau – Writer & Filmmaker (official website)
▸ Leonard Koren – Author (official website)
▸ Surinder Bains – Miraj Hammam Spa - Toronto, Canada
▸ Kathy Nelson – Kabuki Springs & Spa, San Francisco, CA
▸ Stephen A. Colmant – Doctor, Las Cruces, NM, guest author at Sauna Times and author of Sweat Therapy: A Guide to Greater Well Being
▸ Bare Foot Ted MacDonald – Endurance Athelete and founder of Luna Sandals

This summit was the spark that ignited the US bathing culture boom. 🔥

In the third part of our Winter Sauna Carnival series, we celebrate the unsung heroes of Finnish tradition. As Janne Orava (our resident Saunalier) explains in this clip, "Suomenhevonen" or Finnish horses have always been an integral part of the sauna experience. From hauling heavy firewood to transporting water, the connection between these majestic animals and the heat of the sauna goes back centuries.

At the 2026 Carnival at Ikaalinen Spa & Resort, guests could experience this history firsthand with horse-drawn carriage rides through our village of 45+ mobile and stationary saunas.

There is nothing quite like the "Avanto" sting. 🧊🔥

In the second part of our Winter Sauna Carnival series, we dive into the heart of Finnish winter culture: the ice hole. Known as Avanto, this tradition of plunging into freezing lake water after a hot sauna session isn't just a challenge—it’s a total body reset.

At the 2026 Carnival at Ikaalinen Spa & Resort, over 500 guests rotated between 45 different saunas and the refreshing (read: bone-chilling) waters of Lake Kyrösjärvi.

What is Avanto?
In Finland, Avanto is a hole cut into the ice specifically for winter swimming. It’s a practice rooted in health, believed to boost circulation, release endorphins, and provide the ultimate stress relief.

❔ Can a baby use a sauna? Professor Ilkka Välimäki gave a talk titled A Child in the Sauna at the International Sauna Congress in August 2006.

He started with saying that a hundred years ago, 95% of all childbirths in Finland took place at home. Often, the mothers gave birth in the sauna, and a new baby had their first bath there.

A survey they carried out in southwestern Finland showed that children are bathed in the sauna from the average age of 4.5 months onwards, with 12% having their first sauna bath at one month!Babies were taken into the hot room for less than five minutes at a time, but more than a quarter of 13-year-olds or older stayed for over 15 minutes.

⚠️ This is not health advice and one should consult their doctor before taking a baby into the sauna, however this survey is a representation of a way of life and shows how early on children in Finland are indoctrinated into the sauna culture!

🌡️ The Finnish sauna is a hot place, where the high air temperature (80–90 °C) and its rapid fluctuation during bathing sets high requirements for the body’s temperature regulation system. Children’s temperature regulation is in many ways more limited than that of adults. Children have less of an ability to sweat and a high daily need for water intake. Therefore families keep the baby on the lower levels of the sauna where it is cooler and often in a small bathtub to enjoy the pleasures early on.

🇩🇪 According to the German Sauna Federation, it is already “possible from the 4th month” if the baby is completely healthy.
