In a stunning new achievement that feels closer to science fiction than reality, scientists have brought a species of wolves back to life after it went extinct more than 10,000 years ago!
The species of wolves is called the “Dire Wolf,” also known as the “Fearsome Wolf,” which lived in North America and went extinct over 10,000 years ago.
A biotechnology company named Colossal Biosciences extracted DNA from a tooth dating back 13,000 years and a skull that is 72,000 years old, both belonging to Dire Wolves, and then reconstructed their genetic profile. After thorough and detailed analysis, and identifying the main genetic differences between Dire Wolves and their closest living relatives today, the gray wolves, the scientists modified gray wolf cells to embody the characteristics of Dire Wolves and match their genetic makeup.
The company then used these modified cells to create embryos, which were implanted into the wombs of dogs as surrogate mothers. The final result was the birth of three healthy Dire Wolf pups last October, named Romulus, Remus, and Khaleesi.
And now, you can hear the sounds of this species in the video for the first time in over 10,000 years! A legendary achievement.
