🇫🇮 What the maternity package is
The Finnish maternity package—often called the baby box internationally—is a benefit given by Finland’s Social Insurance Institution (Kela) to families expecting a baby or adopting a child. It’s part of the maternity grant, and the idea is to give every child a good, equal start in life.
The 2025 edition contains about 38 different items such as:
— Bodysuits and trousers in various sizes
— Caps, socks, mittens
— Outerwear (e.g., insulated booties, snowsuit/sleeping bag)
— Baby care items (towel, brush, bath thermometer, nail scissors, toothbrush, bib)
— Hygiene and feeding accessories (ni**le cream, bra pads)
— A baby book
The items are chosen each year through a competitive tender and designed to be safe, practical and high-quality.
Note: The box itself can also be used as a baby’s first bed in some years of the tradition, though this isn’t its primary advertised function today.
💶 Cash alternative
Instead of the physical box, parents can opt for a cash benefit (a one-off tax-free payment) worth €170 (and proposed to increase to €210 from April 1, 2026, if approved).
Many families choose the box because its contents are generally worth more than the cash payment.
👶 Who is eligible
To get the maternity package or cash benefit, you must:
1. Have lived in Finland and be covered by the Finnish social security system (Kela).
2. Have undergone a health check by a doctor or maternity clinic before the end of the fourth month of pregnancy, with proof that the pregnancy has lasted at least 154 days.
3. Apply for the maternity grant no later than 2 months before the expected due date (or within 2 months after an adopted child is placed in your care).
Adoptive parents are also eligible under similar conditions.
If you choose the maternity package, it’s sent to your address (you’ll get a pickup notice), usually a couple of weeks after your grant decision.
