Civa Fiji Pearls Civa Fiji Pearls Ltd - producer and exporter of high quality pearls from the pristine waters of Tave

Civa (Fiji) Pearls Ltd was founded in 2006 by two Canadian expats Claude Michel Prevost and Danielle Belanger. Lured by the extraordinary colours already in production in Fiji, Claude and Danielle began their own pearl production in 2007 with a subsequent first harvest in 2010. Most of this production is currently exported to Europe, with a small amount retained and available from partnering resor

ts here in Fiji. The pearl farm is situated on the windward side of the Taveuni, the 3rd largest Island of the Fiji group. Spread over 55 hectares in the pristine environment of Wailoa Lagoon, the farm enjoys a constant flow of pure water from the South Pacific to produce these incredible gems of the sea. Recognized all over the world for their specific natural colours, Fijian pearls are the most sought after pearls in the world.

Chronicle of a Pearl Farmer #5 is out!

The weeks following the Coup d’état were an eye opener for me. I was used to politics. I was raised in it. My father was a high public servant, and, at one point, was a deputy minister for a few years. My aunty was the chief-of-staff for the prime minister of my province for many years. Discussio...

Bula all! for the ones following the Chronicles of a Pearl Farmer, chapter 4 has been posted on our website. Enjoy the read!

We were not supposed to stop in Fiji. The original plan was to sail from Tonga to New Zealand so we could dodge the cyclone season. That is the recommended route by the community of sailors, cruisers, books, insurance companies and navigation articles. We were at anchor in Vavau harbor in Tonga well...

Adapt or die! Climate Change... probably. There has been a lot of talk over the last decade about climate change. Many guests that come on the farm always ask me if I do see change. Until last year, I had to say no. I am not a denier. I just remember well the Y2K drama. There was a lot of noise and no issues at the end of the day. As for climate change, there were no change I could see. We monitor water temp and salinity every week and we do this year-round. There was no change. I cannot say that anymore. For the last two years, we did not see warmer waters but we did see warmer water for a much longer summer season. It used to peak at 29*C for 8 weeks. It now peaks at 29*C for 12 to 16 weeks. The last two years, we saw a general weakness in the oysters at the end of the summer (heat fatigue). It is time to adapt. Climate change will be all about mitigation. In the last year, we have moved the farm in a deeper, wider and cooler bay. And we will probably have to move our Fall implant and harvest to the middle of Winter. We are having our first test run this week in the middle of July (winter over here).

Bula all,
If you liked the first installment of the Chronicles of a Pearl Farmer, here is the second short story. Enjoy.

This is the second installment of Chronicles of a Pearl Farmer. It is the follow up of the first chapter. We are now drifting in the South Pacific with no wind and a dead engine on our way to the Gambier Islands of French Polynesia.

Every year, about 2500 guests come on the Pearl Farm to see what we do and how we do it. I invariably get 3 questions from everyone that comes. One of them is this one: " How does a Canadian from the Great White North ends up in Fiji to make pearls?"
I decided to answer to this question in a more public manner. I wrote 8 short stories about it called Chronicles of a Pearl Farmer (I know... not a very original title). I just posted the first story on our website.
Apologies to my friends and family from Canada for writing it in English... my audience over here is 99.345% Shakespearian.

Graduation day today for Josephine Mccomber and Melania Baleilekutu who are now officially part of the gang! The Nasomo Handicraft Center is now a proud team of 10. We celebrated a bit today with a day out on the farm and a magnificent lunch/lovo prepared by Teila Soro. It is great to see them thriving.
