Sitting at an American medical facility for one of the kids... There's no one here in the giant waiting room. I'm alone for over an hour while the appointment is going on. Clearly no other practitioners are working but this one...but there are 3 office workers chatting. 3... because that's how many it takes to deal with the billing intricacies of American medical insurance. Why do we spend so much on medical care? Well. THEY SAY it's because the offices clearly have to be ready for the fight when insurance is expected to pay, right?

Except they have a separate billing office...

I'm getting $500-800 to go on vacation to London for 3 days! HOW?!

How expensive is American healthcare? It is literally cheaper for me to fly to London, pay cash for an Airbnb, pay cash to see a UK doctor, pay cash for the prescription, fly home, and call it a vacation.

Depending on how much I spend at the pub for 3 days, that entire trip still saves $500 to $800 compared to walking into a local US pharmacy.

The math is completely broken. When an international flight and a hotel stay cost less than one month of US health insurance, the system isn't working. Thanks for the freedom, America. The freedom to go poor following doctors orders...

This is the non-glamorous, behind-the-scenes reality of why we are pushing so hard to get this family to France. We aren't moving for a permanent vacation. We are moving because the cost of existing here is becoming impossible.

Of course I can't afford it either way, so when coverage ends in July I'm SOL...but if anyone has an extra $3,000 hanging around, let me know. Thanks! 💖
