"Without a global coordination mechanism, companies and governments will have to make difficult decisions about safety while under competitive and geopolitical pressures," it said.

Workers, farmers, miners, transport workers and teachers have been protesting for weeks in Bolivia, demanding measures to ease the country's worst economic crisis in four decades and calling for President Rodrigo Paz to step down.

About 100 road blockades have been reported nationwide, a typical protest tactic in Bolivia which has triggered shortages of food, medicine and fuel in La Paz, neighbouring El Alto and other cities, and driven up prices of basic goods.

Paz has warned that Bolivia is at a "breaking point” and said he was looking into using the military to quell the protests.

AFP’s Franco Fafasuli reports from La Paz as the government faces mounting pressure to resolve the crisis.
