Sur Radio Campus Paris 93.9FM, ils s’affrontent un lundi soir sur deux dès que le soleil se couche. Leur mauvaise foi partagée, leurs anecdotes invérifiables, leurs deux inépuisables collections de disques nous berçent méchamment jusqu'à minuit. Donald Byrd studied composition in Paris under Nadia Boulanger, about as rigorous a classical education as jazz musicians of his generation got. Black Byrd, his jazz-funk crossover, went on to become one of Blue Note's biggest sellers, which Boulanger's syllabus almost certainly did not anticipate.

African Odyssey opened at Johannesburg's Market Theatre in 1977, a South African musical with book and lyrics from Canadian writer-producer Clarence Wilson and music from bassist-composer Victor Ntoni, who also worked as one of the show's musical directors. The Sacred Lion Dance is one piece pulled out of that larger, cross-continental collaboration.
