Heist at the Louvre!
The whole world has been talking about the awful event that happened at the Louvre Museum in Paris. A major part of the royal historical jewels were stolen last Sunday morning. Because of a major flaw in the security system of the museum, part of French History is now gone.
Amongst it, the fabulous sapphire suite that had belonged to my beloved godmother, the Countess of Paris. I talk about it in my book ONCE UPON A DIAMOND, published by Rizzoli and available on Amazon and Galignani in Paris.
My godmother once told me an amazing story about them.
She was in Portugal in 1974 and had them with her in her country house when the revolution exploded.
Thank god it wasn’t as bad as expected but she decided to take the jewelry to safety in Paris . She didn’t want to carry them so she wore them including the tiara that she hid under a huge fur hat.
As she was about to board she was told to walk through a metal detector! “I almost had a heart attack !!” she told me. And as she walked through nothing happened! The metal detector did not work!

Today was your birthday dearest Nonno! Te ne sei andato in silenzio 40 anni fa, lontano dalla tua Italia, da grande Re e da vero Signore.
Mi manchi tantissimo, ma ti sento sempre accanto a me e alla nostra famiglia.

Today was your birthday dearest Nonno. You left in silence 40 years ago, far from your Italy, as a great King and as a true gentleman.
I miss you so much, but I always feel you next to me and our family
My grandfather King Umberto and I in Versailles 1962 (photos 2& 3). My grandfather who was then living in exile in Portugal came to France quite often to visit my mother and us. We would always go to stay with him for Easter and we adored him. He was always kind and fun to be around as he had this talent to make everything exciting and magic and made us laugh a lot! There were lots of expeditions to famous monuments, museums and castles, lots of riding and beach time. . He always told us marvelous stories and had an encyclopedic knowledge of history, art and literature ! He would travel under the incognito name of Count of Sarre (a castle he once had in northern Italy) when he died in 1983 he left the Holy Shroud of Turin to the Pope and I went to Rome with my family to see him (last photo)

A million Thanks to PHAIDON and MELANIE GRANT for including me in their fabulous new book, THE JEWELRY BOOK !! where they wrote:

Glamorous, opulent, eclectic, and exotic, each Prince Dimitri jewel is loaded with symbolism. Some are alive with humor, but all are infused with the magnificence of the prince’s family’s historic jewels. Related to a sprawling web of European royalty, Prince Dimitri of Yugoslavia is the great-great-grandson of the Grand Duchess Vladimir of Russia, who amassed one of the most important jewelry collections in history. The stories of these fabulous jewels-long since dispersed-filled Dimitri’s childhood, and he later cultivated an enviable knowledge as senior vice president of the jewelry department at Sotheby’s New York. A wealth of culture and intellect inspires both his writing and documenting of his family history, as well as his eponymous jewelry house founded in 2007. A true original who has forged his own style, Dimitri confidently scours the world for inspiration for his own jewelry creations. He shifts from the curved paisley motifs of Mughal India to the angular medieval crosses in oxidized bronze or tribal Makassar ebony necklaces. Above all, he embraces unusual materials and vibrant, richly hued gemstones, including Siberian amethysts handed down from his great-grandmother Queen Elena of Italy that he has incorporated into his designs.

Fabulous MONET Show in Les Baux-de-Provence (Carrières des Lumières)
The Carrières des Lumières are monumental former quarries located at the foot of the heavenly village of Les Baux-de-Provence, in the heart of the Alpilles mountains in Provence.
Historically, these quarries were mined for their distinctive white limestone, which was prized for construction and used to build the surrounding villages and historical monuments, including the Château des Baux-de-Provence.
The immersive show dedicated to Claude Monet is being held at the Carrières des Lumières in Les Baux-de-Provence, from January 31, 2025 until January 4, 2026. This visual and sound experience celebrates the 150th anniversary of Impressionism, immersing visitors in the heart of the most famous paintings by the French master.
. Visitors wander through a former quarry transformed into a giant XXL projection hall, where Monet’s works come to life on the walls and floors.
• A voyage through landscapes – From Le Havre to Giverny, London, Venice… the show highlights the variations in light and the emblematic scenery that inspired Monet.
• Original soundtrack – The experience is accompanied by a specially composed musical score designed to enhance the immersion.

On this day, August 4, my family and I remember and celebrate the birth of my grandmother Maria José of Belgium, the last Queen of Italy. Born in 1906, her life spanned nearly a century of wars, exile, and profound changes in Europe. Yet through it all, Maria José remained steadfast in her principles, her intelligence, and her quiet but courageous opposition to tyranny.
She was queen for only thirty-five days in 1946, but her legacy far outshines the brevity of her reign. In the shadow of Mussolini’s dictatorship, she used her influence to support the Resistance, to offer shelter to the persecuted, and to serve as a secret link between the Vatican and anti-fascist movements. Her bravery, hidden beneath a veil of diplomacy and grace, made her a silent heroine.
The daughter of King Albert and Queen Elizabeth of Belgium, educated in history and a polyglot, Maria José brought not only elegance to the Italian court, but conscience. Her love of culture, her writings, and her life in exile after the monarchy ended reveal a woman of extraordinary depth and integrity—someone who wore the crown with dignity. She never returned to the Italy she had served with such loyalty, and yet Italians remember her not as a nostalgic figure, but as a symbol of decency in dark times. My grandmother was made president of the Red Cross and actively organized taking care of wounded soldiers, even working as a nurse in hospitals.
At the same time she collaborated with Pope Pius XII and Cardinal Montini, future Pope Paul VI, helping to save Jews from deportation by hiding them in monasteries and convents.
In order to communicate with the Resistance she had devised an ingenious stratagem: whenever she had a public royal engagement, always announced by the Court Cicular, she was warned that someone in the crowd would approach her and present her a bouquet of flowers of a certain color with a message inside. She was then able to have that person and their family contacted later with instructions where to go hide and avoid deportation.

My favorite place for long walks is definitely the Alpilles, a small range of low mountains in Provence, 12 miles south of Avignon. Alpilles literally means Little Alps.
They were immortalized in art by Vincent van Gogh, who painted many images of the Alpilles’ landscapes during his time in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence on the north side of the mountains.
Nature there is just breathtaking. There are huge wild rosemary bushes as well as thyme and oregano growing wild everywhere creating the most heavenly scent.
One of the most amazing places is “The Old Lady’s Cave”!
The shell limestone of the hill of Notre-Dame du Château bears witness to the geological evolution of the Alpilles massif, from its formation at the bottom of a shallow sea to its uplift. This very friable sandy rock, eroded by wind and rain, served as shelter as early as the Neolithic period before being restructured in the Middle Ages to accommodate a hermitage.
The establishment of this isolated religious community is linked to the pilgrimage and the miraculous statue kept in the chapel since the 12th century.
These troglodytic dwellings were inhabited until the mid-19th century. The last resident, a solitary woman nicknamed “la Jacquotte,” left a lasting impression on the people of Gréoux, who named this cave in her memory. Photos 9,10,11.

Fabulous day, in the heavenly Basque Country, at the foot of the Pyrenees, a few miles from the Spanish border in Saint Jean-Pied-de-Port, one of the stops of the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.
In the early 16th century, the original medieval castle built on the hill was destroyed by the Spanish after a 21-day siege. A context of ongoing conflict between France and Spain led to the decision to make Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port a “defensive stronghold” between Pamplona and Bayonne.
It was in the 1620s that the citadel took shape. Ramparts reinforced by four corner bastions and the building of the royal gate were constructed.
The city then became a strategic military site for French troops.

August 1960, my twin and I with our parents and grandmother Princess Olga in Tuscany. Every year we spent the summer at my grandparents’ enchanting Villa Demidoff in Pratolino next to Florence. It had been built from 1569 to 1581 for the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Francesco de Medici, by the famous Italian architect Buontalenti. The gardens of Pratolino were a jewel of the Mannerist style. The palace fell into disrepair after his death so in 1820 grand Duke Ferdinand brought some cannons and demolished it! The gardens were redesigned in the English landscape manner and became one of the most romantic gardens in Tuscany with grottoes, ponds, lakes, statues and temples. After that it was sold to my ancestor Prince Pavel Demidoff who restored the Paggeria or pages’ lodgings, a charming L-shaped pink villa filled with the most divine works of art. The ruins of the previous villa were still there and we would go with my grandmother and play archaeology, digging and searching, always finding fragments of frescoes.
The most amazing feature on the property was the 45 feet tall statue of the Appennino built by Giambologna in the 16th century. Its head was a room and the eyes were windows!

A million thanks to Lee Fryd for the marvelous article in New York Magazine on the Royal Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus that belongs to my family since 1573 when Pope Gregory XIII bestowed it to us in perpetuity. I am now the delegate for the USA perpetuating the family’s tradition of chivalry and philanthropy that dates back to 1099 when my ancestors founded the first order. https://www.newyorksocialdiary.com/a-princely-purpose-revitalizing-the-royal-savoy-order-for-new-generations/ ❤️🔝🔫💣

Today is my beloved grandmother’s birthday.
June 11th 1903, my grandmother Princess Olga of Greece and Denmark was born in Athens. She was 10 years old when her grandfather was assassinated and 15 when her Romanoff relatives were massacred by the Bolsheviks and the first Greek revolution happened. She went through two more revolutions and the two world wars. She even lost a son in a car accident when he was 25.
To me she was my darling Amama whom I adored, always kind, always protective, always available. She adored her grandchildren! During my childhood she made everything magic. All her life she wrote me the most kind letters, invariably ending by “God bless you and protect you always my darling Fatty, your devoted Amama” Today all of us grand children think of her with love and nostalgia.

Such a fun afternoon!
I was invited to visit the Nasdaq studios today and participate in the closing bell ceremony.
A quintessential New York moment that ended with my photo in Time Square.
