Ori 07 is almost here and it’s time to highlight (some of) the amazing folks they will appear in our pages.

We’re pleased to introduce photojournalist and storyteller Carolina Herrera (Caro Herrera ), who m will make her Ori debut this fall. Herrera was raised in Argentina by Peruvian parents and has made her career in New York City. As a child of diaspora, she has found a calling telling visual stories of migration and identity—diving deep into the meaning of home, culture, and belonging.

In Herrera’s words, “I deeply believe in the power of storytelling. We are visual beings; we connect with what we see and, even more importantly, with what it makes us feel.”

While most of Rocky Mountain National Park’s 4.1 annual visitors pass through the park’s eastern gates near Estes Park, the Grand Lake gate along the area’s southwestern edge offers an otherworldly alternative.

Resting in the shores of Grand Lake, this quiet access point offers trails, waterfalls, mountain passes, and one heck of a meadow skip.

On a recent trip, we took a break to enjoy the view all to ourselves. Moose and river trout approved.

“Trinidad and Tobago’s food culture is heavily influenced by South Asian diasporic ingenuity: immigrants who adapted their recipes based on where they landed,” writes Meghna Jaradi 🍊 .

In Issue 06, she highlighted the food and legacy of Pam Jacob from Pam's Caribbean Kitchen 🇹🇹 . A self-confessed improvisor, Pam still uses pounds of habanero pepper in her chutneys, but has incorporated Washington apples into the mix for a distinct, geography-inspired flavor.

If you’re in Seattle, be sure to stop by her restaurant for all you can eat on Wednesdays, and the best doubles in town every weekend.

Hong Kong’s independent bookstores are under attack, part of larger crackdown aiming at the region’s free press and freedom of speech. In addition to shuttering stores, authorities are arresting local bookstore owners leading to public outcry across the publishing world.

“I am a bookstore employee” has become a rallying cry across the publishing world, a callout against oppressive regimes aiming to regulate the media we consume and the voices we hear.

We began featuring independent bookstores in Issue 03 with an inside look at East London’s Brick Lane Bookshop. Daniela | Food & Travel Writer 🇲🇽🍋‍🟩 described the locale as a center for immigrant literature and a communal gathering space for diverse voices. The independent bookshop and independent press in general will always hold an important piece of our hearts, and we will continue to champion and support these spaces for years to come.

Argentina and England’s bad blood runs deep. The Falkland War, a battle for contested islands in the Atlantic earned England a geopolitical victory in the 1980s. Argentina repaid the favor in the World Cup final of 1986 with a mythical, yet controversial performance from star Diego Maradona.

When the two nations meet again in the World Cup 40 years after that final, the late great will be looking on. So too will his most faithful fans, Maradona fans so devout they formed a religion around their fallen hero.

The Iglesia de Maradoniana (Church of Maradona) was formed in 1998 to celebrate the man who brought Argentina its first World Cup trophy. The group now numbers in the thousands and has branches on every continent. Maradonianas celebrate Christmas on Maradona’s October 30 birthday and are baptized into the church by recreating his infamous “Hand of God” goal from the 1986 final.

People always say soccer is religion. A select few have turned one of its greatest players into a real life savior.

May we all remember that Messi may have Argentina’s attention, but Maradona will always have its heart.

25 countries, one champion. We’ve been on Cloud 9 during this World Cup season (if you don’t believe us just check out Issue 06), so when Red Bull invited to be part of its own spin on global soccer tournaments, we couldn’t say no.

Inspired by the World Cup and the beautiful game, Red Bull Four 2 Score brings the continents together for a new kind of soccer celebration. This action-packed bracket style 4v4 tournament is coming to Seattle on July 18–a day before the World Cup Final—with winners heading to Nationals in Los Angeles and potentially the World Final in Toronto. Games are 10 minutes long with goals in the first and last minute counting for double. No keepers. One sub. Winner takes all.

Ori is built on local writers and photographers telling their stories from home on a global scale. It’s a twist on the normal travel narrative, a mission to pass the mic to voices often overlooked.

After three years of building a special global network, we realized it was time to bring that mission home to Seattle. This spring we hosted our first ever Youth Journalism Initiative, an afterschool program working with local public school students to tell the stories of our city through an inherently homegrown lens.

The result of that work is Common Crow, a student-led publication and a communal celebration of our backyard. The zine was beautifully designed by s♄aron and crafted by over a dozen high school students from a Garfield High School. It talks about everything from waterways, to immigrant neighborhoods, and o urban farming and the history of cherry blossoms. It’s informative, entertaining, raw, and, most importantly, ours.

This project was made possible by 4Culture and is currently on display at CAM. The program will be a part of our June 26 mag event and limited copies will be available. RSVP via link in bio.
