“Jean-Noel Gaidet is a local mountain goat. Known as ‘Jean-No’ among friends and colleagues, [the Frenchman] has spent a lifetime poking into every fold of his home valley, hiking, climbing, and skiing his way through the jagged expanse. Along the way, he has developed an almost encyclopedic knowledge of the terrain near his home. To ski with Gaidet is not simply to access a ski route, it is to connect a series of ascents and descents into an otherwise impossible adventure.”

Last April we joined the crew at in the stunning Savoie region of the French Alps for a week of skiing, apres, fine dining and alpine living. But what stuck out to us most was Jean-No and his wife Julie, local chalet masters, mountain guides, and the keys to a family legacy five generations deep.

Mountains, hot springs, endless trails, a world class river right through town—Durango is a dream for outdoor adventurers. But this Southwestern Colorado locale is more than that. It’s also wrapped in history, fresh local food (and beer), and surprising bookstores.

Author and journalist Heather Hansman fell in love with Durango nearly a half decade ago and has called it home ever since. From skiing at Purgatory Resort, to biking the many trails around Horse Gulch, to catching an author speaker series at Maria’s or a pint at Anarchy, she likes the rhythm in this corner of the Centennial State.

We caught up with at this year’s to get the inside scoop on her hometown. This is Durango, Colorado, through the lens.

Snow comes in fast and heavy in Hakuba, Japan. Despite the harsh conditions, skiers from around the world descend on these northern reaches for unforgettable stunts and deep powder snow.

The back cover of Ori Issue 05 reads like an abstract painting, its colors and shapes inviting the viewer into an unexpected snowy chairlift ride. This film photo by is a soothing visual journey, the perfect midwinter moment captured in time.

We take our back covers seriously. This isn’t a space for unwanted ads, it’s a compliment and key player in our cover package. Grab a copy of Issue 05 to get front and back all in one place and be on the lookout for this image as part of Christie Fitzpatrick’s print store, opening this week on November 19 via link in her bio.

Welcome to our “Why.”

After a tight vote by Ori subscribers, we are honored to announce that K.C. Cheng (aka .north) is the winner of our 4th Ori Creative Grant. K.C.’s story on the rise of blind soccer in South Sudan beat out excellent Issue 04 features from Puerto Rico, Montana, Spain, and beyond.

More importantly, it put a face on a region so many of us know so little about, introducing readers to the world’s newest nation in vibrant, living color. What was once a handful of players has blossomed into a multi-team league, and a chance for one of South Sudan’s once forgotten minority groups to live a brighter future.

“The opportunity to work on a positive story in this part of the world is something that was immediately appealing to me,” she says. “I wanted to find a way to humanize,  and show that there’s a resilience and a hope even in the most dire of circumstances.”

The Nairobi photojournalist is our first Africa-based winner of the Ori Creative Grant and plans on using the grant to fund ongoing projects in Mozambique, the Sahara, and Ukraine. Follow her work via her Instagram, or in publications like , , , and .

To support this initiative, please consider subscribing to Ori’s print magazine. The bigger we grow, the further we go.

Thank you to .gluck for capturing a piece of this story on film.

“When fleeing to a vacation home as soon as the humidity spikes isn’t an option, [summer block parties] offer a moment of escape from the daily grind. The seasonal staple is an antidote to the isolating anonymity of a big city—an act of resistance, a reward for sticking it out, a relic of old New York.”

This summer, New York journalist chronicled the storied history of New York City’s summer block parties, celebrations that began during World War I and have become a rallying point for neighborhoods across the city, from in Queens to in BK. Featuring photography from .kang .lexx the ode to urban tradition embodies the connective ethos you’ll find throughout Issue 05, the Network Issue.
