“The Substance” is the first movie I’ve ever walked out of…the last 15 years of movie watching and reviewing, no other film frustrated me while actually making me squirm in my seat…a lot of props to the sound design, & make up/prosthetic department of this film, as well as Demi Moore & Margaret Qualley’s performances (particularly Moore who should be given a lot of awards recognition)…but that last 20 minutes I saw up until I walked out…yeah when you go for pure shock horror with a ridiculous amount of gore…and dump all your premises that were really well done up until then …it made for a really gruesome yet frustrating movie experience.

The movie wasn’t for me, but I appreciated the commentary on how women are treated in Hollywood and the battle within in regards to aging…if you’re a fan of body horror, this will definitely peak your interests and make or break how you feel by the film’s end.

The visceral direction, the camp & horrors the movie brings…there won’t be another film like it this year (or anytime soon) and for that I give it the utmost respect & appreciation despite me walking out in the final act.

The CGI evokes demons with a dense style, accompanied by twenty ringing bells and shrill distortion. It's a hellish landscape that grabs you by the throat.
Constantine 2 (2025) is a return to the trench coat, concise and cruel, combining Reeves' silent storm with unholy terror. It's a pact with the devil worth accepting.
