Starmer pushes back on devolution criticism during visit to Cardiff 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Sir Keir Starmer has defended his approach to Wales, insisting he’s a “big believer in devolution” after being accused by Labour Senedd members of sidelining ministers in Cardiff Bay.

Speaking during a visit to Ely, Cardiff, the Prime Minister dismissed claims he’s rolling back Welsh powers, saying his focus is “delivering for the people who need it most.”

A group of senior Welsh Labour figures had criticised UK ministers for directing Pride in Place funding straight to councils, calling it a “constitutional outrage.” But Starmer’s allies say it proves two Labour governments can “deliver more together.”

Welsh First Minister Eluned Morgan backed that message, saying both governments continue to “work closely” — though Plaid Cymru and Welsh Conservatives claim Labour is “in disarray” and “out of touch with Welsh people.”

The row comes as the British‑Irish Council met in Cardiff, underscoring the delicate balancing act between UK and devolved powers.

🎅🚂 Magical Memories: When Santa’s Sleigh and the Toy Town Train Lit Up the Valleys 💡🎄

Who remembers the Christmas Sleigh and Toy Town special train touring our Welsh Valleys in the 1950s and 60s? 🌟

Each December, excitement filled the air as Father Christmas arrived in style — travelling from town to town on the festive Toy Town train, built at the South Wales Switchgear factory in Pontllanfraith. The Aberdare Leader even published the full timetable so families could gather and wait for the big arrival!

These rare photos capture the magic in Aberdare during the 1960s 🎁 — a wonderful throwback to the days when Christmas spirit rolled through the Valleys on rails.

A big thank you to Tony Williams, who runs the Old Aberdare group, for sharing this lovely piece of local history! ❤️

Heartbroken Mum’s Desperate Plea: ‘Help Save My Baby’s Life’ After Transplant Fails ❤️‍🩹🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

A devastated young mum from South Wales has made an emotional plea for help after her baby daughter’s life-saving stem cell transplant failed.

Little Dolcie-Mae Edwards-Raymond, who was diagnosed with the rare blood disorder HLH (hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis) when she was just one month old, is now facing a second fight for her life.

Her family’s first appeal to find a donor was supported by Gavin and Stacey star Rob Brydon, and Dolcie underwent a transplant in March. But a few months later, her mum Courtney Jade Edwards, 22, revealed that the procedure didn’t work.

“My baby girl’s transplant has sadly failed,” Courtney said. “No parent should ever have to watch their child fight this hard. I’m begging people to consider joining the stem cell register — it’s simple, but it could save a life.”

Dolcie, now one, will soon return to Newcastle’s RVI Hospital for another transplant attempt — meaning she may spend her second Christmas away from home.

Anyone aged 16–30 and in good health can join the stem cell register through charities such as Anthony Nolan or DKMS UK, offering patients like Dolcie the second chance they desperately need.

💙 Emotional Farewell: Gwent Police Unite to Honour Beloved Officer Joe Little ❤️ R.I.P. 🕊️

There were emotional scenes yesterday as Gwent Police paid tribute to their much‑loved colleague, PC 264 Joe Little, after he passed away in October, due to losing his short battle with cancer.

A dedicated officer for more than 15 years, Joe served with pride and compassion — first as a Community Support Officer in Pontypool before joining the neighbourhood policing team in 2009. Since 2018, he had been part of the Roads Policing and Specialist Operations team, tackling some of the region’s toughest challenges on our roads.

Colleagues formed a moving guard of honour at both police headquarters and the crematorium, where his funeral took place.

Chief Constable Mark Hobrough led heartfelt tributes, describing Joe as “a man full of warmth and humour — a devoted father, husband and role model who brought laughter wherever he went.”

Joe’s legacy of service, friendship and kindness will live on through the communities he protected and the colleagues he inspired. 💙

Masks Back As ‘Tidal Wave’ Of Flu Leaves Hospitals Overwhelmed 😷

Health chiefs are urging anyone who feels unwell to wear a face mask in public as Britain battles a record-breaking surge in flu cases.

Officials at the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) say flu hospitalisations are now about ten times higher than at this point two years ago, describing a “tidal wave” of illness crashing over the NHS.

NHS under intense strain 🚨🏥

NHS figures show that around 1,700 patients a day are currently in hospital with flu, with admissions among the oldest patients doubling in a single week. Some hospital trusts have already brought back mask rules on wards and in busy areas, and are warning that flu patients could occupy up to 8,000 beds a day in the coming days.

‘Consider wearing a mask’ 👍🏻

The UKHSA is telling people with coughs, fevers or other flu-like symptoms to “consider wearing a mask” if they need to go out, saying a snug face covering can cut the amount of infectious particles they breathe or cough into the air. Health leaders stress that masks are a simple step the public can take to slow the spread of flu and other winter bugs, on top of staying home when possible and keeping up with hand hygiene.

Stay away from hospitals if ill 🚫

Several NHS organisations are also pleading with people who have mild or moderate flu symptoms not to visit A&E or hospital wards, to avoid spreading the virus to vulnerable patients.

Instead, they are asking those who are not seriously unwell to seek advice from pharmacists, NHS 111 or their GP, and to come forward for flu jabs if eligible as cases climb rapidly before Christmas.
