The UK will experience a partial solar eclipse on Wednesday 12 August.

The extent of the Sun’s coverage and the timing of maximum obscuration will differ across the country. Local weather conditions may impact viewing opportunities, so it’s worth checking the forecast in advance 🌦️

Northeast Scotland will have around 88% covered just before 7pm, whilst in the far southwest of England there will be around 96% coverage just after 7:15pm.

Never look directly at the sun; use a pinhole projector or certified eclipse glasses to view it.

Sir Ian Wood has died at the age of 84.

The legendary businessman responsible for the rise of Wood Group as an international powerhouse in the energy industry died peacefully at home surrounded by his family.

First Minister John Swinney said the Aberdeen native “helped shape modern Scotland”, while business legend Martin Gilbert said “no one has contributed more to the north-east”.

While business leaders and politicians lament the loss of a “titan”, those closest to Sir Ian are remembering him as a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend.

Police Scotland has ordered an evacuation of ALL residents of Nethy Bridge and declared a major incident as the Cairngorms National Park wildfire rages on.

Superintendent Judy Hill, Police Scotland, said: "The weather conditions experienced within the Cairngorms over the last 24 hours have added further complexities to this situation. With evidence suggesting the fire is spreading towards Nethy Bridge, the decision has been taken to declare a major incident and evacuate residents as a precaution.

"Additional police resources are being deployed to assist in contacting those who need to leave their properties and to maintain cordons around restricted areas while our fire service colleagues continue to tackle the wildfire.
"We understand this is a very concerning time for residents, businesses and visitors to the Cairngorms region. Please be assured that the multi-agency response remains fully committed to bringing this incident to a safe conclusion as quickly as possible."
