Things I learned about the Clava Cairns, I just can’t stop thinking about 🌀✨

Clava Cairns is one of Scotland’s most evocative prehistoric sites that hold a story stretching back nearly 4,000 years. Built during the Bronze Age, the cairns served as sacred burial places, but they were far more than simple tombs. Their design reflects a sophisticated understanding of astronomy, the cycles of the seasons, and the deep spiritual connection between life, death, and the cosmos.

“It’s just a bunch of old rocks”

No, they stand as a tangible reminder of a forgotten past. They are proof that thousands of years ago, our ancient ancestors were capable of extraordinary feats of engineering, art, and spiritual insight. Yet despite all we know about them, so much remains hidden in the mists of time.

In Celtic folklore, snowdrops are strongly connected with the Good Folk, the Faeries. They mark the place where the veil between worlds is thinnest and the Faeries dance between realms.

But don’t forgot to leave an offering…

The most magical adventure in the North/North West Highlands at the weekend to celebrate Preston’s birthday 🥳🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿.

We haven’t ventured that far North in a few years so we tried to make the most of our few days visiting as many sites as we could 🤭. We spent two nights in Inverness staying at the Kingsmill hotel (spa facilities after a long day exploring is our new thing 🤭👌🏽) visiting the Clava Cairns, Urquhart Castle and Corrimony Chambered Cairn. The weather wasn’t great so we visited each site a few times until we got some drone content.

We took a wee detour yesterday before travelling home to visit Glenelg Brochs (Dun Telve and Dun Trodan) and Eilean Donan castle at Kyle of Lochalsh! We very almost extended our adventure by a night with Skye soooo close it really called to us 🥹. It was a difficult decision but we decided to leave that one for the next adventure.

We’ve covered hundreds of miles, visited new sites and revisited a few of our favourites. Memories banked and still processing it all but we are home again (for now) and feeling deep gratitude, connection and contentment for it all.

What a truly magical place to call home 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🌀

📸- lots to share but a few for now

Did you know Scotlands national animal is a unicorn? 🦄

📍 Stirling castle

Rooted in Celtic mythology, the unicorn symbolises strength, power and purity. It embodies Scotland’s resilient, fierce and untameable spirit.

Our current reads atm! Can you guess which is Preston’s and which is mines? 🤭

This week we’re also starting to learn Gàidhlig again. We started to learn Gàidhlig as a family activity before island hoping around the Hebrides. It’s a deep regret we didn’t keep it up so it’s a shared goal for this year. If you have any resource recommendations we’d love to hear them?

If you could go to any Scottish island this weekend, where are you choosing and why?

I’ll go first…Definitely Orkney for us to visit Ring of Brodgar, Maeshowe, Stenness, Skara Brae and all the other prehistoric sites. It’s an island that eluded us over the years. We’ve planned a visit then somethings came up. Definitely high on our list this year but I think we’d need more than a weekend 🤭.

📍 a throwback to our pilgrimage in 2021 to Calanais, Isle of Lewis. Definitely due another pilgrimage to the Hebrides soon too! 🌀🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
