ROOTS WARRIOR SOUND honors Danny Clarke – Born August 7, 1950 🇯🇲
Today we pay tribute to Danny Clarke, one of the founding voices of The Meditations, a legendary Jamaican harmony trio whose music helped shape the sound of roots reggae in the 1970s and beyond. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Danny began his career with The Righteous Flames, the backing group for Winston Jarrett and Alton Ellis, before co-founding The Meditations in 1974 with Ansel Cridland and Winston Watson.
🎤 From Majestic Gardens to Musical Greatness
The Meditations were born in the heart of Kingston’s Majestic Gardens, where Danny and Ansel first connected over shared musical visions. Danny’s guitar skills and soulful voice became the backbone of the group’s early sound. Their first hit, Woman Is Like a Shadow, released in 1976, sold over 45,000 copies in its first month and launched them into reggae stardom.
The group’s harmonies were so powerful that Bob Marley personally requested them to sing backing vocals on tracks like:
• P***y Reggae Party
• Blackman Redemption
• Rastaman Live Up
They also contributed to classics by Jimmy Cliff, Junior Murvin, Gregory Isaacs, and The Congos, including Heart of the Congos and Police and Thieves.
