A few shots from Déjà Vu Down ’26 as some of the cars made their way through Spelga on Saturday.

It’s not every day you get to see a line-up like this coming through the Mournes, so it was definitely worth having the camera with me.

I only managed to catch a few as they passed, but with Spelga and the mountains as the backdrop, I couldn’t have picked a much better spot.

🐾❤️A dog’s life is never long enough. ❤️🐾

Bestie was one of those dogs who left a mark on everyone lucky enough to know him.

Over his 15 years, he competed in Championship Obedience and Championship Agility, appeared regularly at Crufts, competed at World Cup level and represented Agility Team Ireland at the World and European Open.

For one wee dog, that is some story.

I’ve known Bestie for around eight years, and he really was the absolute best dog.

Michael and Kate told me that, as he got older, he became a complete mummy’s boy, following Kate everywhere almost like a wee puppy all over again.

And I love that.

For all the competitions, Crufts appearances, rosettes and everything he achieved over the years, there was still that same wee dog underneath it all.

The one who just wanted to be close to the people he loved.

Because underneath all the titles, ribbons and achievements, that’s what they really are to us.

Family.

That little shadow following you from room to room.

The face watching every mouthful of food just in case something happened to fall his way.

His favourite spot in the house.

The routines you never really think about because they’ve simply always been there.

Dogs quietly become part of the rhythm of our lives. They’re there through the ordinary days, the difficult ones, the good news, the bad news, the changing years and all the little moments in between.

And then, when they’re gone, it’s often those ordinary things you notice missing most.

The little pitter-patter of paws that used to follow you everywhere.

The empty spot where they always lay.

Looking around expecting to see them there.

Bestie sadly passed away a few weeks ago after 15 wonderful years.

I made this memorial slate using one of Bestie’s photographs, with that proud first-place rosette around his neck.

It felt like the perfect photograph for him.

A reminder of everything he achieved during an incredible life, but also of something far more important than any title, ribbon or competition.

He was simply Bestie.

Their dog.

Their family.

Their wee shadow. ❤️

You know that small island sitting just off Ballyhornan Beach?

Most of us know it simply as Gun's Island.

From the shore it can look like little more than a quiet piece of rock and grass sitting out beyond the waves.

But the waters around Gun's Island and the coastline stretching towards Sheepland have witnessed some remarkable events.

In 1798, a French vessel, L’Amitié, was making its way towards Ireland carrying weapons intended to aid the United Irishmen when it was wrecked near Sheepland Harbour.

Remains from the wreck included iron cannon and cannonballs, and cannon from the site have been recovered over the years.

More than a century later, Gun's Island found itself at the centre of another dramatic event.

On 24 September 1941, during the Second World War, the cargo ship S.S. Bereby ran aground at Ringvad Point on Gun's Island while travelling from Liverpool to Takoradi in West Africa.

The ship was carrying vehicles, equipment and supplies.

Rather than abandon the cargo, the British Army mounted an unloading operation.

Incredibly, photographs from the War Office collection still survive showing soldiers using cranes and landing craft to remove vehicles and equipment from the stranded ship in October 1941.

And the history goes back further still.

Records from the 19th century connect Gun's Island with the Coastguard, watching a stretch of water where weather, tides and hidden rocks could make life extremely dangerous for anyone at sea.

Then there are the stories that don't sit quite so neatly in official records...

This part of the Lecale coast has long carried tales of smugglers and gun-runners, using its isolated coves and rocky shoreline under the cover of darkness.

Local folklore also speaks of caves and hidden passages around the coast.

How much of that is historical fact, how much has grown in the telling, and how much may contain a grain of truth?

That's part of what makes places like this so fascinating.

Because when you stand on Ballyhornan Beach today, everything can feel incredibly peaceful.

The waves roll in.

Gun's Island sits quietly offshore.

People walk the beach without giving it a second thought.

Yet those same waters have seen a French vessel carrying weapons for rebellion...

A wartime cargo ship stranded against the island...

Soldiers working offshore during the Second World War...

Coastguards watching the sea...

And generations of stories about smugglers moving along this rugged coastline after dark.

Sometimes the most interesting history isn't hidden in some distant castle or museum.

Sometimes it's sitting right in front of us.

We just have to know where to look.

Some love stories are written in letters.

This one began at a disco in Killough and was carried through two old phone boxes. ❤️

They first met at just 16 years old, at a disco in the Ancient Order of Hibernians Hall in Killough.

A year later, when they were 17, he walked her home one evening while she was staying in Coney Island.

And it was at that little phone box in Coney Island that he first told her, “I love you.”

As their relationship grew, the phone box beside Jordan’s Castle in Ardglass became their midweek connection.

Tuesday. Wednesday. Thursday.

Those were the nights they talked, counting down to Friday when she would come down to stay for the weekend, and then on Monday he would make the journey to Belfast to see her.

No mobile phones. No instant messages. No video calls.

Just two people making time for each other, conversation by conversation, week after week.

Now, 46 years of marriage later, they are still very happily married.

That is the story behind this commissioned slate.

To anyone else, these might simply look like familiar local places. But to them, they mark the beginning of a life together.

A disco at 16.
“I love you” at 17, at the Coney Island phone box.
Midweek calls from Ardglass.
Monday visits to Belfast.
A lifetime that followed.

Some places never stop meaning something. ❤️

Today’s photography lesson:
There's a very definite limit to how long Skye will tolerate me practising pet photography!!

She started off looking interested, moved swiftly through mild concern, and eventually reached the unmistakable “Are you still at this nonsense?” stage. By the final photograph, she looked ready to pack away the camera herself.

In my defence, she’s a brilliant model. In Skye’s defence, the promised appearance fee of treats was nowhere near enough. 😂📸🐾
