With Sculpture in the Gardens opening this weekend, letās meet another of the wonderful artists exhibiting at this yearās event!
Itās all about finding the perfect piece of glass when Kate Rust is creating one of her stained glass art works.
For āThe Peacockā, which will be on display at Godinton House & Gardens Sculpture Festival, she found a stunning teal iridescent glass. She said: āIt particularly glistens in the sun with other peacock feather colours such as purple, gold and green.ā
Another work Kate is exhibiting, āBroken Made Wholeā, is made from many small pieces of clear but textured glass plus lilac cathedral glass within a magnificent 6ft piece of Kentish oak. Proceeds from this piece will be donated to the charity Rethink Mental Illness.
Kate, who lives on a smallholding in Bethersden, Kent, has worked with stained glass for many years, although she started again āmore seriouslyā a couple of years ago. She said: āI wanted something just for me between the demands of a family and the smallholding.
āHalf of my work is for my own relaxation, I come out into my workshop and can get lost for hours! I started to incorporate stained glass panels into wood sculptures for the garden, sourcing either recycled wood or oak from the local timber yard. I love creating them and they are proving to be very popular.
āMy inspiration mainly comes from the countryside and I like to think of a design thatās going to show off the shape, knots and beauty of each piece of wood, combining with the colour and texture of glass.
āSometimes it takes quite a lot of head scratching to work out how to marry the two together as they can be viewed from the front and back. It can be a bit of trial and error. But itās just about finding the perfect piece.
āOther works I am bringing to Godinton include āResilience and Hopeā, which features dandelions ā they symbolise resilience and hope through their ability to thrive in harsh conditions and they represent new beginnings. āForget Me Notā, in a beautiful blue with yellow, is set in a heavy natural chunk of oak. āTears fall for a Reasonā is rather special and is actually suitable for a memorial.ā
