Scallop diving is a tough existence — nomadic and seasonal, it involves early starts and being tossed around on unheated boats. So it’s little surprise that when a new, safer and more peaceful method of harvesting scallops was pioneered, Grant Campbell made a career change from diver to rancher.

The men in white coats turned up this week...... not to take us away this time but to start an EU project on our scallops. They took samples of our breeding stock to map their genome.. after that they will be looking for genes or sequences that could indicate better growth, higher yield (bigger meat) and a predisposition to NOT absorb algal toxins. Very technical and very expensive...... sounds a bit Frankenstein.. no, just selective breeding, slightly more advanced than our current selection method !errr that one looks OK".
Better still Highlands and Islands Enterprise have decided to fund our commercial development stage so we just need to find another £250,000............

We thought we were just crap at Facebook having never used it before but since the close of voting on Richard Branson`s Pitch to Rich competition we have learnt some new words, vote farming and database manipulation for starters. Apparently all was not as it seemed with the voting system and the whole purpose of the competition altered in a "race to the bottom", as one contestant described it. We decided it was time for a futile gesture and have withdrawn from the competition at this late stage. Sour grapes? No, we would like to think it was just total disappointment in Virgin Business and how their intention of making this a competition based purely on the business idea seems to have morphed into something completely different. Of course there is more that we would be unwise to publish here. We are probably guilty of being stupid enough to have believed this would turn out otherwise. I was personally stupid enough not even to have voted for Scot-Hatch myself because that`s what it said in the rules.
Anyway, the future of scallop ranching does not rely on Virgin Business and we will continue with our search for the necessary investment elsewhere.

Massive thank you to all that voted, over 3100 of you. Not quite enough though, 5th not 3rd. There have been a few complaints about 3 of the companies in the competition but we will not get the chance to put this under Bransons nose. I have been banned from ever entering something like this again, so time consuming and very, very addictive. We will keep the Scot-Hatch Ltd. FBook page going, so if you discover you have no life you can always see what we are up to. Cheers, Grant.
