Can anyone help with maintaining this valuable piece of parish equipment?

** VOLUNTEER FOUND **
THANK YOU.

Jackie will shortly be moving and we are looking for a volunteer from the village to take over responsibility for keeping an eye on the village defibrillator located at the village hall.

Having a defib available can dramatically increase the survival rate for anyone suffering a sudden cardiac arrest and bridges the gap before paramedics arrive. Given our rural location, it's an incredibly valuable piece of kit.

Looking after the unit isn't difficult or time consuming. It involves doing a weekly check to ensure the unit is working properly, (it has a self test built in so it's easy to see if it isn't). Then every 3 months you log a status report online to ensure the emergency services can confidently send people to it should it be needed. If the unit is used, you'll get a call to replace any used components, for which we keep spares.

She is happy to show anyone the ropes. Please message her ASAP if you're interested.

The B3232 road closure has caused problems throughout the village with road users not taking notice of the road closure signs until it's too late. Our county councillor has made direct contact with Devon Highways.

This Halloween, Torridge District Council is asking residents to minimise waste while celebrating the spookiest night of the year! πŸ‘» πŸŽƒ

Pumpkins can be cooked and turned into a variety of dishes, providing a great source of vitamins A and C, iron and riboflavin. Find a range of delicious recipes from Recycle Devon at: www.recycledevon.org/eat-your-pumpkin.

Your old pumpkins can be added to your compost heap to nourish your garden or can be β€˜monster mashed’ and added to your food caddy. If they’re still in good shape, you can also leave the pumpkins on top of, or beside, your kerbside caddy for the post-Halloween pickup by our crews. Please remove any decorations or candles first.

Face paints, hats, and headpieces can transform ordinary outfits into extraordinary costumes, eliminating the need for disposable outfits and reducing their impact on the environment.

Reminder - the deadline for submissions is October 31st. ⏰

North Devon and Torridge district councils are inviting landowners, developers, residents and community groups to help identify land that could support sustainable development across northern Devon.

The call for sites is being launched alongside the publication of a new Housing and Economic Land Availability Assessment (HELAA). The HELAA assesses the potential for sites already identified by the councils to deliver new homes and land for employment. However, to ensure the new local plan can meet the significantly increased housebuilding targets recently introduced by the Government, it is anticipated the councils will need to explore a wider range of potential sites than those already identified in the HELAA.

With the help of local communities, the councils want to understand the availability and potential suitability of additional land which could deliver affordable housing and employment opportunities. The councils are also keen to identify land for a wide range of other uses including community facilities, natural green spaces and other infrastructure that is vital to build and support thriving communities. Anyone is welcome to suggest potential opportunities for development, including 'brownfield' sites and other disused land that could be put to better use.

Councillor Bob Hicks, Lead Member for Economy and Estates at Torridge District Council, said:
"The local plan is a pivotal piece of work that affects everyone in North Devon and Torridge, as it is the blueprint that sets out how we would like our communities to evolve over the coming years. As part of this we are calling on everyone - from landowners and developers to community groups and residents - to help us identify land that could provide new homes and job opportunities, deliver key infrastructure and services, and support the well-being of our communities.
"This call for sites helps us understand the options available, what land might be suitable for development and what needs to be protected."

Councillor Malcolm Prowse, Lead Member for Regeneration, Economic Development and Planning at North Devon Council, said:
"We recognise that many people feel there has already been significant amounts of house building in the region. However, we will work hard to ensure that any new proposals are carefully considered and any additional housing is well designed, sensibly located, and contributes to local affordable housing and infrastructure needs while meeting the ambitious targets that are imposed on us.
"Putting a site forward to us doesn't automatically rubber-stamp it for development. We will work closely with communities and stakeholders throughout the preparation of the new plan to ensure any land earmarked for future growth will support development which genuinely responds to the economic, social and environmental needs of our local area."

Thank you to everyone who attended our event at Torrington Rugby Football Club yesterday afternoon to view the plans for a new business park at Hatchmoor in Great Torrington.

We will be collating all the feedback to identify any recurring themes to refine the designs ahead of a formal planning submission in the New Year.

Farmers across northern Devon are being urged to make the most of free and impartial business support from North Devon +.

The Farm Support Services programme offers specialist support for farmers and landowners to help their business perform to its fullest potential. North Devon Plus' specialist agricultural advisors can help eligible farmers who wish to discuss their business performance and identify funding they may be entitled to.

The team has already helped farms prepare for the next round of funding opportunities, supporting them to plan survival budgets and farm cash flows, develop marketing strategies, explore innovative business ideas to boost income, and navigate environmental schemes and compliance.

The programme is funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund via North Devon Council and Torridge District Council and is only guaranteed until the end of March 2026, so farm businesses are being urged to access support while they can.

πŸ‘‰ Anyone who is interested can speak with an advisor or book a free support session by calling 01237 428 834 or emailing [email protected].

Torridge Resident Climate & Nature Survey!

We want to hear from you!

Torridge District Council is asking for residents' views to help shape the work of the Councillor Climate Emergency Working Group. By sharing your thoughts, you can contribute to a healthier, more sustainable environment for everyone in Torridge.

The short survey takes around five minutes to complete and is anonymous. It asks residents a series of questions about action they have taken to protect nature and or reduce their climate impact along with any barriers to action they have faced.

Feedback from the survey will support and inform the group's work, which aims to assist with outlining what action needs to be taken in the council's own operations and how the council can support residents and businesses to act.

πŸ‘‰ To take part in the survey, please click on the link in the comments.
πŸ‘‰ The survey will be open from Monday 15 September to Friday 17 October 2025.

🚨Emergency Alert 🚨

The UK government is testing the Emergency Alerts system on Sunday 7 September 2025 at 3pm.

Your mobile phone or tablet will vibrate and make a loud siren-like sound, even if it’s set on silent. The alert message will confirm this is a test and that you do not need to take any further action.

Regular testing ensures the system is functioning correctly, should it need to be used in a life-threatening emergency. Find out more at gov.uk/alerts.
